I have 4 of the Midway "Tactical gun pouches" that are on sale now for $10. They are awesome. basically they carry one pistol, have 6 magazine holders, and have two side pockets. That means you can organize your gun, it's mags and some ammo into one bag. They fit nicely (or can be hung by the handles) in your gun safe. Then when you want to go shooting, you just grab the bag with the gun you want and everything is already there.

I stick that into a duffel bag or backpack to go to the range.

Those cases make any bag you want into a range bag. The only other thing I bring anyway are eyes, ears, tape, paper targets and an Uplula. For competition, the only extra thing is more ammo and my belt with holster attached.

I also have an MTM "Shooters accessory box" which I take to the range. It's better for rifles than pistols though, as putting a pistol in there takes up quite a bit of space. But for rifles, it is very good since. Lockable, and the lid fits things too.

Wow, the clear winner seems to be the Midway Competition bag. Great price, too. Thanks everyone for their input!

The Dawson range bag looks pretty awesome, too (thanks, WolfSamurai), but the price difference is too wide to make it a serious contender.

For the $5 difference, I probably won't be waiting for the bag to go on sale again.

My favorite is a lunch box bought at Walmart, not noticible by others at all, could easily carry it to anywhere, very discrete and covert

I just use the case that comes with the gun because I am too cheap to buy range bag lol. However, I will put that case inside my Marine Corps tactical bag thou.

I like the Midway bag that others have posted up, but it's really big and can get really heavy (loaded up with charged mags and lots of boxes of ammo, my bag usually weights in at 50 lbs... tested on a scale).

Lately, I like using a smaller 'messenger' style bag that can hold my pistols and my eyes & ears, and then a small bag with a handle for the ammo. Makes carrying around and transporting actually easier than the large Midway bag for me.

FYI the Midway bag is a copy (rip off) of the Shooter's Connection bag. It costs more but is also made of better materials.

Midway bag is still a deal, though.

I use a 5.11 Rush backpack that has a lot of internal compartments and pockets. I prefer carrying the load on my back so I have my hands free.

Seriously, what makes a range bag a "range" bag, versus "a bag"?

                  What features are really necessary?

As mentioned by others, most guns come with boxes when you buy them, boxes that are lockable and that's all you need for legal transport (I think).

The thing I like about dedicated range bags is that the padding makes them stand open rigidly, more like a box than a bag. But some ghetto cardboard or foam can do that for a normal bag.

I don't go to the range often, so I didn't want to spend a pile of money on a bag. Also I take a lot of stuff when I do go .. rests, spotting scope, couple of bottles of water, stapler, and then the usual gun stuff. I have a big canvas Klein tool bag that I won in a raffle. It's sort of shaped like a old style doctor's house call bag. I have a lockable nylon portfolio type pistol case that holds mags too that I throw in my bag. Keep my eye/ear protection in a little military tool bag that also goes in the Klein bag. Load up my ammo can with ammo and I'm off to the range. It may not be stylish or gun chic, but it's very functional.

Function is why I really like the Midway large bag. At the range bring multi guns, ammo, all the other stuff including the kitchen sink, and keep it organized and easy to reach. Only catch is it can get a little heavy.
When I compete, take everyting out but the bare essentials, throw the bag over my sholder and it works great.

Personally, pistol rugs, slim pockets for shoot-n-c targets, mag holsters, mesh in the spots that hold brass to allow debris to escape, and in general, just more geared toward shooting. I can't say enough good about any of the midway bags and I used a cheap remington bag that lasted me a LONG time before switching. Also the ability to carry a lot of gear. Try carrying 50-60lbs in a normal duffel bag and seams start to shred.

I use this for multiple handguns

and this for one or two handguns

The maxpedition Methuselah also looks like a good option.

MidwayUSA bag if I can drive the car to within 20 feet of the bench table. The fully loaded bag with ammo is over 40 Ibs.

3-day backpack for any match that requires more than 50 feet of walking.
