+1 on the deadbolt(s). It doesn't really matter how many keys are out if there's more than one. It's too easy to copy a key. The deadbolt hardens the target and puts you in charge of who gets in unannounced. You may also consider an Ohai holster velcroed to your bed or nightstand. It's much faster than a safe, and you may need that extra speed for those that don't use a key.

Also, +1000 for not over reacting. You have the pistol for the very purpose of defending your domain.

looks good to me. I also think you've got too many keys out. When I was a renter, first thing I did was swap locks. I dont give a crap about the property mgr. they want in, they can knock. If (slim chance) they figure out that they dont have the right key, its not hard to convince them that they 'somehow got their keys all mixed up'.

So out with my flashlight and .40 to check what it was, turns out roommates girlfriend stopped by to sleep over cause he was getting an early flight and she was collecting him from SFO and she lives in Santa Rosa.

When I got back to the room my girlfriend gave me a lot of grief for over reacting. We talked about it this morning and she is cool now, but did I over react? I don't think so. Her take on it, is that if I have to grab a gun to check a noise, I am living in to dodgy an area and need to move. I told her this would be how I would check out a noise if we lived in a "nicer" area.

And once you are married then it's your family's safety first.

            Run this past the GF:

If everything is ok (no threat) then I don't need to get out of bed at all, do I? Let alone worry about a gun.

If everything is NOT ok (there is a threat present) then I am damn well not going to meet a threat unarmed, that would be stupid.

But we can't really lay here in the dark just wondering can we? Neither of us would get any sleep wondering if we have an intruder in the place.

Since I don't know in advance which it will be... should I go under prepared and potentially wind up in a world of hurt or should I go over prepared just in case? If it was a bad guy and he took me out, WHO IS LEFT HERE TO DEFEND YOU?

Follow up question is does she know where your gun is and how to use it (not just you showed her one time, but has she actually used it as in live fire).
The one thing worse than defeat is surrender.

Not an over-reaction in my eyes but I have one question. In order for the Cali Castle Doctrine to be on your side you typically want to show signs that your or your loved ones lives were in danger/life threatened. That can be easily corroborated with signs of a forced entry but in this case a key was used. That seems like a problem if a shoot did happen.

another thing about the keys, when i was renting, i would bring my own lock sets to the places i would live, i would change them out, (at least the deadbolt), and screw the landlord. when i left, i would replace them with the originals. if you have roommates, there are locks now, that you can change the key, without going to a locksmith, (that is if you have a different key, to match your lock with)

I took what people said and I have acted on it. I have removed one set of keys out there, going to add verbal notification if I ever am in this position again and I have discussed it with my roommate and GF.

dude! i tried to make a thread, on how many posts do you read, before you post a response, (only i screwed it up, and duped my own thread), but i edited the first threads post, to say, disregard, and go to the other), noone pays attention to what you post, your title dictates their response, therefore, "TOO MANY KEYS", are the cause, and effect, for the entire situation.

you posted, you can either move on, or keep coming back to read, what you don't want to hear....the truth.
