What is your location right now? If you live outside of Kalifornistan getting an older S&W would be a no brainer. The older S&W are not on the roster. Good ones in 4" or shorter don't show up really often (in my area anyway) and command a hefty price tag.

Stick with Ruger, S & W, Colt, or Dan Wesson for .357 mag. Than decide if you want full size or something small.
Colt and DW are out of production and might be hard too find. Ruger and S & W are easy to find new or used. Ruger will be cheaper and stronger.
I personally own a Ruger GP100 and Speed Six. I have owned Security Six in the past and I often shoot my Son's Colt Trooper. I recommend any of these.
If you want compact, look at Ruger SP101 and the S & W small frame revolvers.
      Good luck.

If you look at dan wesson revolvers look at em real close, check chamber slop, look for monson vs. parker (I'd take a monson). My monson is great, my last parker was not. I personally prefer Dan Wesson 15-x revolvers or Ruger GP-100 for .357. Love my DW 15-4VH.

Cant go wrong with a Ruger or a Smith but then if you can find a nice Colt Python and you want to spend the $$$$.

I've always thought a model 27 would be cool.

If you can get your hands on a good Ruger Security Six I don't believe you'll ever regret it. The 3" barrel model is a good choice, as is the 4". I've wanted one for years, they are rare as hen's teeth here for sale to ordinary civillians. Damn handgun roster!

                    From God's mouth...
I own the speed Six with 2 3/4" barrel. This is the fixed sight version of the Security Six. I would not sell it for anything. This is the one that lives in my nightstand safe.
The Security Six I sold was a 4" blued. I sold it to buy my GP100 back around 1990. The GP100 is a great gun, but I wish I had kept the Security Six.
Yes, these are getting hard to find in CA.

+++For the GP100 and the Python. Don't own a 357 Smith but have a couple 38s and a 44mag. Like the older N frame pistols, pre lock. Get something not available here in Kali.
If you ever get tried of it I'm sure you could find someone here to take it off your hands.
                      Good Luck

+1 on the Security Six if you can find one. I have one I've owned since 1975 and it is still very low on the likely to sell list. I am partial to the S&W L-frame for a 357. The N-frames are nice but just a teeny bit big for me -- YMMV. The GP-100 is worth a look. It has a slightly shorter trigger reach than the 686 and the grip design is friendlier to padding.

If you want something unusual look for a Manurhin MR-73.
