The egg shell foam in cheaper cases will discolor the blueing and plastic AR stocks. I have had it happen to me. It is hard to get rid of and if you leave it too long it will be permanent.

You can go to any hobby shop and buy silicon oil they use for shocks on RC cars. It comes in different weight, so choose whatever you like. It is very cheap, then moisture the clean rug with this silicon oil and wrap the gun. It will be way cheaper then buy those specialized socks in gun shops.

All my guns are wiped down after shooting with Breakfree CLP (I did not say cleaned, just wiped down)---then they go into an old style gun rug and then into a safe---no rust after 40 years of doing it this way. No, I don't work for Breakfree!

What would be the best soft case inner material for a shotgun? I just purchased one and I don't have a case nor a safe for it. Turners has an el cheapo soft case for $9.99 right now but I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

If you store your guns in small enclosed container like that go by a shoe store and ask them if they have or will save some of the desiccant packets that new shoes ship with. They almost certainly will, and will likely gladly give you a handful of them. Stick them under the foam or around the edges and they'll absorb any moisture that builds up in the case for you.

Here is what keeps my guns dry inside my safes. I have one of these in all my safes. Above it is a humidity meter. You can't read it because it's a crappy cell phone pic, but when the pointer is straight up it's ideal humidity for a gun safe.

I have outlets inside the safe in the picture but choose these over a goldenrod. I never liked the idea of keeping something plugged in in my safe. Plus a goldenrod doesn't remove humidity, it simply heats up the air a little bit which keeps humidity from forming. These little dehumidifiers actually remove humidity from the air. The have to be taken out of the safe and plugged into an outlet to recharge once every 5 to 6 weeks. They work really well.

Those plug-in desiccant based dehumidifiers work really well in a big container like a safe, and in a small one like a Pelican case I always use those metal ones you throw into the oven to recharge. I think there are even Pelican branded ones. The big thing is to make sure there's a color change indicator so you know they're not working anymore and can act accordingly.
