    Promotes Rust

So I read from another thread that keeping your gun in a pistol case with the black or charcoal colored foam in it will promote rust. I have always kept my guns in those types of cases for about 5 or 6 years and I have been lucky to not get any rust. But, keep in mind I do use that Hoppe's wipe down rag that is "Charged" with some solution/product, the name of it escapes my mind at this point.

So what do you guys and girls use to store your firearms or where do you keep em since those cases promote rust?

I will probably continue to use the pistol cases, I just put one of those silicone white poison things that you find in your shoe boxes, guitar case, or whatever you purchase now-a-day.

My blued revolvers live in a gun sock inside a fleecy gun rug. Stainless and park'd just get the rug.

The fleecy gun rug will hold moisture and can promote rust as well.

Storing in a leather holster is bad, too. The tanning chemicals can eat the blueing.

Yes. Storing in a foam case can be bad.

So far my guns have not rusted and they been inside a foam case for months. I guess I'll have to come up with something new

I use those weird "socks" you can buy from nearly every gun store. They are impregnated with silicon, and with a light coat of oil after cleaning, they get dumped into one of those and into the safe. I keep a couple of rifles in hard cases with the foam you are talking about, I just give them a nice coat of finishing oil, and have a small descant bag in there to keep it company in the safe. Never had any problems with that... good luck!

Desiccant is a great way to absorb the moisture.

Desiccant is the solution. I also use it for the ammo.

none of my guns are stored in rugs or cases of any sort. i lay my handguns flat on the shelving that is provided in the safe. long guns stand in storage cutouts provided in the safe.

i use a Goldenrod inside the safe.

I lay my handguns on the shelf in my safe as well. Long guns also stand inside. I don't keep anything in cases holsters socks whatever. My buddy had his .308 in his gun case and it started to rust.

Hmmm. Maybe I will look into a sock. But, in the mean time Ill just keep up what im doing. No rust yet and its been years. However, now I do use a little white bag thing in with the gun as well as a coat of hoppe's product.

Foam doesn't promote rust. Moisture promotes rust!

But foam can retain moisture. So, the methods previously mentioned in this thread would be of use and appropriate.

The only problem I know of with the black foam is that it will eventually rot, and your gun will be covered in a black sticky goo. This usually takes 5 to 10 years, but it will happen. Storing the case in a hot area like your attic.

There is also a closed cell foam option which supposedly doesn't hold as much moisture:

Most cases have a couple layers of foam in them. I usually take out the top layer and leave the gun sitting on the bottom layter wrapped in a silicon cloth. In this manner the gun isn't stored encased in foam so it has a bit of breathing room. And I toss a desiccant pack in as well, wipe the gun down regularly, etc.
