I wonder if the gun was stolen or used in a crime.

Or PITA wife made a husband "Get rid of that thing" when their first child was born. We can speculate all day how it got there, some legal, some illegal.

1 point to the person who makes up the best bullet point back story.
          -van used in porn shoot
-stashed with valuables from shoot (gun, cocaine, RU486)
-sold van and forgot about valuables
-guy bought van and did the ol' porn shoot inspection and found said valuables.
-guessing removing more panels will reveal the rest
          -happy hunting

I would strip that car down completely. Maybe there is a kilo of coke hidden somewhere.

Do the right thing. Turn it in to your local law enforcement agency as found property. Get the report number. If no owner can be found, you are entitled to claim it. The lack of moral fiber shown in threads like this sometimes amazes me.

You are suppose to turn it over to LE as found property.
If no one claims it, it then legally becomes your property.

When you turn it in, tell them you want it back, if no one claims it.

How much is a kilo of uncut Cocaine? Oh sorry for being off topic.
I think you have to make an attempt to return the property. Is it a modern gun? Is it blue or stainless, rusted?

I would say if the vehicle was sold as-is and the previous owner didn't clean it out, the gun was sold with the vehicle and the spare change under the seats, those French fries they dropped and the lint in the ash tray.

If you turn something to the police which is the right thing to do don't expect to get it back if it goes unclaimed. I found a gold necklace and turned it over to the local PD. Went back later to see if it had been claimed or not. The response was "what gold necklace?". My fault for filing a formal report and just handing it over with my business card. Recently I found a watch, took it to the sheriff's office to turn it in. They didn't want it and told me that if it went unclaimed they would not give it to me, it would be destroyed. The deputy suggested that I keep it and try to find the owner on myself. So much for doing the right thing! I'm still a boy scout and managed to find the owner of the cell phone I found on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago. I didn't bother taking it to the sheriff's office, did the leg work myself and reunited it with the owner.

I believe he can keep it, but he'll be getting a visit from DEA.

The law quoted does not require turning it in, it requires effort to find the actual owner.

Destroyed? Only if no one bids on it.

How about an advert in the Nifty Nickel or classifieds of the local paper addressed to "the most recent owner of such & such a vehicle" advising an item was found, call this cell & describe/provide documentation. Advise transfer back of properly ID'd item(s) will be done in compliance with state and federal laws.
