From the CA Penal Code:
485. One who finds lost property under circumstances which give him
knowledge of or means of inquiry as to the true owner, and who
appropriates such property to his own use, or to the use of another
person not entitled thereto, without first making reasonable and just
efforts to find the owner and to restore the property to him, is
guilty of theft.
Do the right thing. Turn it in to your local law enforcement agency as found property. Get the report number. If no owner can be found, you are entitled to claim it. The lack of moral fiber shown in threads like this sometimes amazes me.
You are suppose to turn it over to LE as found property.
If no one claims it, it then legally becomes your property.
When you turn it in, tell them you want it back, if no one claims it.sigpic

How much is a kilo of uncut Cocaine? Oh sorry for being off topic.
I think you have to make an attempt to return the property. Is it a modern gun? Is it blue or stainless, rusted? The wise man said just find your place

I would say if the vehicle was sold as-is and the previous owner didn't clean it out, the gun was sold with the vehicle and the spare change under the seats, those French fries they dropped and the lint in the ash tray. From the CA Penal Code:

so if he doesn't find the original owner does he get to keep it?Actually, just last week a San Jose man was having problems rolling down the window on his used minivan he bought last year. Took it to the shop for repair and they found 14 kilos of cocaine stuffed in the door.

If you turn something to the police which is the right thing to do don't expect to get it back if it goes unclaimed. I found a gold necklace and turned it over to the local PD. Went back later to see if it had been claimed or not. The response was "what gold necklace?". My fault for filing a formal report and just handing it over with my business card. Recently I found a watch, took it to the sheriff's office to turn it in. They didn't want it and told me that if it went unclaimed they would not give it to me, it would be destroyed. The deputy suggested that I keep it and try to find the owner on myself. So much for doing the right thing! I'm still a boy scout and managed to find the owner of the cell phone I found on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago. I didn't bother taking it to the sheriff's office, did the leg work myself and reunited it with the owner.Comment

How about an advert in the Nifty Nickel or classifieds of the local paper addressed to "the most recent owner of such & such a vehicle" advising an item was found, call this cell & describe/provide documentation. Advise transfer back of properly ID'd item(s) will be done in compliance with state and federal laws.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment
