Get the serial checked by your Police Department to see if its stolen, if it's cleared, then go to the CA DOJ website and download a form (free) that you can send in to register the gun if previous owner is unknown...

GET THAT SERIAL CHECKED! ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU FIND IT IN THE PANEL OF A CAR!

The PD doesn't just take it when you do that, though?

Maybe that would be an ideal candidate for sealing in plastic with a bunch of ammo and burying it. If I had to guess I would say your odds of being able to keep that after an attempt to get the serial number checked would be less than 50-50.

                  From the CA Penal Code:

                  485. One who finds lost property under circumstances which give him
knowledge of or means of inquiry as to the true owner, and who
appropriates such property to his own use, or to the use of another
person not entitled thereto, without first making reasonable and just
efforts to find the owner and to restore the property to him, is
                  guilty of theft.

Do the right thing. Turn it in to your local law enforcement agency as found property. Get the report number. If no owner can be found, you are entitled to claim it. The lack of moral fiber shown in threads like this sometimes amazes me.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

+1 about doing the right thing. Heck, maybe there will be no owner and you'll get it back

calling the guy out is something I dont agree with

who knows the story of the car
It could have been sold multiple times, through auto auctions, used car dealers etc

the car world is not a world for the faint hearted...

Does he have to return to the original owner the several kilos of coke that the gun was on top of. j/k

I think the OP needs to post pics of the stash spot and the handgun.

I say turn it over the cops. Who know what kind of bad ju ju is attached to the handgun.

Actually, just last week a San Jose man was having problems rolling down the window on his used minivan he bought last year. Took it to the shop for repair and they found 14 kilos of cocaine stuffed in the door.
