    vertical grip on AR pistol?

I was at the ontario gun show yesterday and a vendor had an AR pistol (lower clearly said pistol) and it had a vertical grip. I have always been told that an AR pistol cannot have a vertical grip that is why I have an angled grip on mine.

Federally, it's a go (IANAL). But in the DPRK? Someone will be by in a minute.

Putting a VFG on a AR style pistol is legal. BUT it also becomes an AOW and you must pay the tax.

What you might have seen was a Franklin Armory AO-26. They are not pistols but Title 1 firearms. Do a search for them.
            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

from my understanding, it's okay federally since it meets the 26" minimum for not being an AOW. it's okay for California since the barrel length and configuration keeps it under pistol paperwork.

yes, it is still a pistol in CA, but the VFG is not a CA-issue on that pistol.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

                      You are correct.

                      Under Federal laws...
Attaching a vertical forward grip on a "handgun" will make it an AOW, which requires BATFE approval & a $200 tax stamp.
Attaching a horizontal forward grip or an angled forward grip to a "handgun" is legal, because they are not vertical forward grips.
Attaching a vertical forward grip on a "other" firearm is legal because the firearm is not a "handgun".

In regards to the Franklin Armory XO-26...
Even though it is sold in CA as a pistol, under Federal laws it is not a "handgun", it is a "other" firearm. This is because the overall length is greater than 26". To be considered a "handgun" the rifled barrel length has to be less than 16" and the overall length has to be less than 26". The XO-26 has a rifled barrel length less than 16" and an overall length greater than 26" and does not have a shoulder stock, this makes it an "other" firearm. Since, it is a "other", it can legally have a vertical forward grip attached to it.
CA laws consider any firearm with a rifled barrel under 16" to be a "handgun" and a semi-auto "handgun" that uses a fixed magazine can legally have a vertical forward grip attached to it.

ATF 4473 = "handgun", "long gun" or "other"
CA DROS = "handgun" or "long gun"

                      What this all means...
The Franklin Armory XO-26 is 4473'd as an "other" and DROS'd as a "handgun".
It is can legally have the vertical forward grip attached to it because under Federal laws it is classified as a "other" and under CA laws because it uses a fixed 10 round or less magazine.
