I thought it was our own Neil who was doing the press check...but then again, his press check may not be firearm related.

I press check after I load my gun just to be sure. It did save me from possible embarrasing moments a few times. Once it is loaded, it is loaded.

      Hey I have a question.
I have some home defense .40 rounds that I've re-chambered multiple times.
Should I throw them out? What would happen if I shoot them? And why is it bad again?

There's no requirement to feel anything on a press check, it IS a visual inspection. It's also an admin function so there's no need to be tactical and have your eyes on the target. Your eyes are on chamber

I call it a chamber check so maybe that will suit you better mr CK.

        Geeze.

Get some calipers and measure the OAL, if you have too much pushback then toss them.

Assuming you don't care what state your firearms are in, I guess you could find doing a chamber check or press check unnecessary. However, those who carry or keep firearms for defensive/offensive purposes need to do them to check the condition of their weapon. There's no other way to know if you have a round chambered. LCI's can fail, and unless you have a hole in the chamber as your LCI, you're going to do a chamber check.

During some of the training classese I've taken, I've heard some good stories from the instructors about other officers who went out into the field with empty guns or empty chambers. Needless to say, the partner was very very unhappy that their partner was running around with an empty gun. Suffice to say, this instructor was very very adamant for press checking your firearm. It's not just about knowing the condition of the firearm, it's about confirming it also.

In your first post in this thread you said press checking (a common term understood in the shooting community to mean checking to ensure a round is chambered) your pistol was "stupid"/unnecessary and potentially a bad habbit. Then there was the whole technical semantic argument which convolutes the issue and does a disservice to the validity of doing a press check even though you know how the term is commonly used.

Respectfully, I am not trying to call out you as a person or your intelligence in any way. I do have an issue with unsound advice on a public forum meant to benefit the shooting community where people may come try to learn something. If you dont feel the need to check your chamber at the range thats fine, and up to you. Please avoid the blanket statements.

Bottom line is if you are taking an unloaded pistol and administratively loading it with the intent that it will serve its purpose when called upon...It doesnt matter if its an HD gun going in the nightstand, CCW going in the holster, duty pistol going 10-8, or on the competiton line with the command "load and make ready"...Do a press check. And for simplicity's sake, semantics aside, when I say press check, I dont care if you take that to mean visually inspect or stick your finger in there, just check your chamber. The distinction between rifle or pistol, primary or secondary should not matter. Both should be checked.

It IS a good practice. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing it.

I'd like CK_32 to be in a room with Mas Ayoob, James Yeager, Gabe Suarez, Ben Stairs, Larry Vickers, Costa, Haley, Dave Harrington, Rob Leatham, a bunch of DI, etc. and have him tell them all they don't know what "press check" means.

Press checking your pistol before going 10-8 is very much so a good habit and will one day save your life.

Practice it on the range, practice it before you holster your LTC, practice it before you place your nightstand gun in the drawer, whatever... Press checking is like putting your game face on your gun, you can trust that it is ready to go if there is that God-forbid 0.01% moment you may need it.

Edit: In most cases, press checking a rifle (for example: AR15) is not necessary. You can use the round-right/left method.
                    1. Before loading your magazine check to see which side the top most round is seated in: left or right. Either with your indexing finger or visually.
                    2. Load your rifle.
                    3. Take out magazine and check to see that the next round is seated in the opposite side of the magazine, therefore you KNOW that the first round chambered properly. (Unless you're a magician and the round magically disappeared into thin air.)
                    4. This method works great in the dark and doesn't need a finger to be "placed" into the chamber

I would say dont keep rechambering them fully every single time. That has caused issues, I dont care what gun it is.

I dont see why press checking is a problem, better to know you have a round in there than not. I'd do the same with my revolver, its very safe.

In any case, have people ever had an accident when press checking, I'm sure, but keeping your damn finger off the trigger and not doing the 1911 method (finger so close to the damn bore on the front of the slide) then it should be fine.

My question regarding a chamber check is this:
There are lengthy discussions on the proper chambering of a round. Riding the slide, using the slide stop/slide release/slide lock back lever to release the slide, sling shot method are alway brought up in the discussion. My understanding has always been that if you don't let the the full length of the stroke under full power of the spring drive the round home, then there is a possibility of having an FTF or FTE. Don't you negate the proper chambering procedure by dislodging the round then reseating it with less force?

I mean this in the kindest of ways, but how is it unnecssary? I've seen chamber indicators not indicate a round....when clearly it had a round. Machines break, but in any case I've heard some people say its not really a "press check" when you do that but eh the name stuck and sounds cool .

I think some of you have way too much lead exposure because my point is going right over all your heads and I've explained my meaning 3 times now...

Because I don't want to press check and think it's dumb. Ok so... Move on with life. If I wash my car 5 times a week does that mean you have to? No but everyone has to push their view and thoughts and beliefs on everyone else.

And again I got specific about the term is because mr jr member figured hed challange me on not knowing what a press check is. So I let him know exactly where the actual term came from and got technical about it to shut him up and show I do know a little something every now and then.

If most of you would read the whole thread you could see I already explained that and squashed this whole debate on that and explained my point and why I got so technical.

And if you don't like my beliefs or way I do things too bad. Go f your self lol

So you guys are just bestif a dead horse and asking why did I say this when I have already explained it in a previous post. So read think and discover. It's all already been explained by me. You don't get it then oh well. I'm don't defending lymphoid I think I explained and covered it quite well.
