Press Checking

Well, no offense to anyone in particular, but the assurance with which ignorant statements were posted in this thread was pretty alarming in and of itself. For a topic as basic and simple as a press check, no less.
Although the piling on was probably unnecessary, at least the record was set straight.sigpicComment

Simple indeed. But you misunderstand. You press check before the gunfight. We are on the same page with that one. If you reload, you are already in a gunfight. Weather or not you emptied the mag it's always a good idea to reload. Do I still need to press check? No. Can I? Yes. Would I if I was in a situation where I was in the process of using my gun? No. Remember, I'm talking about everyday carry stateside. Re-read my statement where I question press checking DURING a gun fight. "In a real gun fight (state side) why the fuch would I press check after reloading while keeping my eyes facing the enemy downrange??????"during an admin reload, you press check to see if the round seated in the chamber BEFORE the gun fight, not during. Tap, rack, bang (like you stated) is correct procedure during the gun fight.
remember to check if you one in the hole before running and gunning. simple.Last edited by p1choco; 09-09-2011, 6:58 PM.Comment

Another one. Did you not read? What is this on the line talk? I'm talking real life. Press check has already been conducted before placing gun in holster. Please tell me you are being sarcastic and not a graduate from VIPER or something. I stand by what I say. Tap rack bang. If you need to do it twice, RELOAD. If that doesn't work, transition to your back up pistol if you happen to have one or create as much distance as you can and fight another day.if you are doing a reload on the line, I would say a press check would be an extraneous manipulation- if you KNOW you loaded a fresh mag into the gun (rifle or pistol) and chambered a round, unless you suffer from memory loss, you know the weapon is indeed hot. If the bolt or slide doesnt go fully into battery, you should also KNOW that there is a feed problem- typically the response to a type 1 or 2 malfunction would be to rack the slide and rechamber - noting the battery condition, and continue shooting.
if the weapon continues to malfunction remedial action is required. and the weapon should be safed, magazine removed, and the round in the action ejected (and chamber visually inspected) to determine the cause of the malfunction.
in real world scenarios, if you were in a gun fight, the general thought is that if the threat is beyond 50yds you might be able to take remedial action, but closer in would require a transition to a secondary weapon....Last edited by p1choco; 09-09-2011, 9:12 PM.Comment

Ya, main thing with the round getting pushed into the casing is from the nose of the round being jammed into the feedramp as it is pushed out of the magazine.
There's not enough force on a press check to move the bullet- Rich

Ok, the extractor doesn't "strip" the round, I worded it a bit off...the magazine pushes the round underneath the extractor, and the force of the slide strips the round off...good call

I dont know what your problem is- I said on the line- as in firing line... If you are shooting and reload a press check is a stupid waste of energy- you are not holstering, you are shooting. end of comment. Perhaps you should read better.Another one. Did you not read? being in a fight, you do the regular drill on a type one or two malfunction- if that fails swap magazines and continue.

Slight difference.
"Press Check" is verifying that it's loaded, via visual check of the chamber.
You're talking about opening the action and visually and physically confirming that it is unloaded.- Rich

Looks like this thread has become a ball of thread and spaghetti with all the 'semantics' of what press checking is and isn't. Frankly, it is pretty simple. You want to verify a round is chambered. Whether you call that a press check, visual check, or a oompa loompa the idea is to verify a round.
More than often is this world of 'tactics' words, semantics, are mumbled out with religious fervor in so much that the point or idea is lost. We really need to cut this sh**t out so we can focus on quality discussions here in CalGuns in stead of picking pepper out of fly sh**t. Some may think that it's 'cute' to play an internet SME [subject matter expert], but for those in know-it's pretty irritating. Like the old saying, "It's better to thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
With that out the way, I do PRESS Check. Do not depend on the LCI [loaded chamber indicator] or your memory to verify a round. And NO, it will not damage the round. It's the Indian, not the ArrowComment
