    Is this possible?

A coworker said his friend shot a beer can at 300 yards with a 357 magnum first shot first time shooting.

    Is this possible?

It's possible but I highley HIGHLEY doubt it. I've come to find out a lot of gun guys like to make up a lot of big stories.

Especially the big manly man guys. Seem to have the most outrageous ones.

Tell him do it again and video tape it this time. Or just let it be and know not to believe much of what he says.

I once had a shot of rye whiskey with a Bud. Does that count?

It's also possible that given enough time a monkey with a typewriter could type out the complete works of Shakesphere....I just wouldn't hold my breath while waiting.

I took my friend shooting for the first time in his life and he hit the bullseye at 7 yards on his first shot with a .357. I thought that was near impossible. The rest of his shots that day barely hit paper.

I can only make that shot at 100 yards, about 1/3 of the time. (2 for 6 on my father's Model 29 .44mag).

And that's with somewhat sporadic practice with that gun. Most of my practice is spent on other guns.

People have different (and often times outrageously inaccurate) judgments of distance.
I bet the distance was no more than 50 yards. Still a good shot. But very lucky.
At 300 yards the iron sights of a revolver don't give you a lot to work with.

                    possible....yes

                    probable....no

then again, I hit a clay pigeon in flight with my .357 (yes, it was all luck lol), so anything is possible

Actually, for newbie shooters, very often the FIRST shot ever is a good one. Why? No expectation of recoil, therefore no subconscious anticipation of recoil. Once they feel the recoil, hear the blast, and feel the concussion, then all bets are off.

Anything is possible. I shot my Colt 1911 50yrds at steel plates...Hit it first time...Range master was impressed. I hit 3/5 times. 300 yrds is far.

A new shooter's first shot is going to be his/her most accurate shot, assuming he knows how to use the sights properly. Once they've felt the recoil, let the flinching and floor shooting begin

I agree with the first shot mentality. When I let my ex shoot for the first time w my 1911, her first shot was dead on. Once she knew what to expect tho, no more shots made it into the 10 ring. However as mentioned, 300 yards is very far. A soda can could barely be visble, even without a gun the view

I like to shoot iron sight with my Colt HBAR and for me to hit a soda can at 300 yards with a cold bore shot will be a very good accomplishment in my book.

Can he even see that soda can at 300 yards? Ask your friend if he can ask his friend, how high did he have to hold on the soda can?

Did he hold dead on or at the top of the can?
