Go with a TRUE custom 1911, made for PPC shooting by one of the TOP shops or go with CZ .
Thanks man, I realy appreciate the advice. I need to look at the CZ's too since it looks like I'm going to be in the + $1K range as far as getting a 9mm with the accuracy I desire.

You might also consider a CZ75 Tactical Sport http://www.cz-usa.com/products/view/cz-75-tactical/ These pistols have a very crisp factory trigger and are great target pistols. Available in 9mm and .40 S&W.

conversions are not projects, you are buying a new gun, you just have to walk out the door of the FFL and then walk back in and wait 10 min. for him to put it back to stock. you walk out with new gun just like you would if it was on the list. no big deal.

What would be a typical platform for the 9mm 1911 conversion process?

When you say "target," are you looking for a gun for bullesye competition or just a better than average gun? A bullseye gun will usually shoot better than a person can hold offhand. My "target" 1911 will shoot 2 inch groups at 50 yards from a sandbag rest. I never even get close to 2 inch groups at 50 yards, but it's nice to know my gun will do that.

Bob Marvel builds 9mm 1911's that will shoot 1 inch groups at 50 yards from a machine rest, but they are a lot more than $1,000.

If you want something better than the average 1911, but don't want to pay for a full custom job, I'd look for a Springfield Armory 1911 in .38 Super and pay a 1911 gunsmith to fit a Barsto, Ed Brown, Kart, etc. 9mm parabellum barrel. You might be able to do this for around a grand, just depends how much the pistol will cost and who fits the barrel for you.

Clark Custom Guns will do an accuracy job for $400 or build a 9mm target gun on your gun for $990. It's expensive, but it's a custom gun. Scroll down to the Hardball guns.

Now I'm looking to move into the realm of 9mm 1911's and was just wondering what my best choices are in the $1,000 or less range. Are any Kimber 9mm's CA legal? I looked at the DOJ roster and it appears their Target II approval may have expired .

Let me know what I should look at generally and any experiences, good or bad, that you've had with your 9mm 1911's.

And also, I'm really looking for a match grade barrel type gun with some goodies on it so not too many plain jane suggestions please

              Thanks guys

Fred Kart makes extremely accurate barrels, but fitting the barrel is key.

I've shot both the Kimber and Springfield side by side. I'll be honest, both need some smoothing over, they're a bit rough around the edges brand new. I own the Kimber, and a buddy had a tuned Springfield Loaded. Both have their +/-, I find the Kimber to be better built without the sharp edges and smoother action. The frame shape is also cut better for my hands, as the gun sits lower in my hand. I've come to find I really don't like Springfield's thick beavertail, there's a bit of material needing to be removed since it prevents the web of my hand to gain a higher hold. That makes the gun point slightly awkward for me. However, the Springfield has a 9mm/.38 breech face which helps greatly in reliability versus Kimber's .40 breech face.

Just wondering, have you had any reliability issues with your Kimber 9mm? And if so, can you please elaborate. I'm just really interested because I'm definitely leaning towards the Kimber and want to know everything possible, good and bad.

Mine run well when the extractor is clean. This is my biggest gripe since it gets dirty so easily. The extractor needs more tension to overcome the larger breech face. What then happens, because the extractor claw needs to be clean, pulling out the extractor is a major pita because the extractor claw is interfered by the breech face when pulling it out due to how much tension there is. So, I used to just use a brush to brush off the carbon build up on the hook. Only thing is, carbon started building up in the extractor channel, causing it to prevent the extractor to have the necessary flex.

Now, I clean the extractor and extractor channel every 500 rounds. It runs well.

I should note something however. I shoot thumbs forward. The gun runs on a 11 lb recoil spring which is very light. I only get failures to eject if I shoot thumbs forward riding the safety, my right thumb contacting the slide may actually slow down the slide travel. When I shoot thumb off safety I've never gotten a failure to eject.

                      So, FWIW.

I've looked into Clark for my bullseye pistol, but their lead time is about a year

Another good bullseye gunsmith who has fair prices and decent lead times (~1-2 months) is KC Crawford. He can build up a 9mm pistol from your supplied pistol. http://kcskustomcreations.com/index.htm

A very good shooting 9mm is the Sig X5. It comes with a factory target, mine was about 1.5: at 25 meters. Singe action only. Cost not that bad if you consider what a similar target gun costs.
