A 16lb recoil spring is standard for a 1911. I've never had a single problem with a 16lb spring in all the years and all the various models of 1911s I've owned.

Talk to Frank Tabor at Tabor engineering .His shop is in San Bruno. Probably the barrel needs to be ramped properly. As mentioned try different ammo. He did my Ithica when he did smithing in his garage at least 30 years ago. It works flawlessly!!! The Ithica feeds all ammo and even the Speer flying ashtrays. Also replace the recoil and firing pin springs with an 18 lb wwolf spring set. A little TLC will get the Ithica running like a charm. Use a Goldcup mainspring weight.

My bad for not wanting to copy the Clawson's book. What I wanted to say was that Itacha was the 1st WW2 contractor who made M1911A1 besides Colt and then I thought why go that route so it ended up sounding the way it did. But I am glad you cleared it.

          No problem.
          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

So I never made it to the range over the weekend, but I guess that just means I have time to pick up springs before heading to the range. I seriously doubt the previous owner bothered to change the trigger, beavertail, change the sights and lower the ejection port, but then again you can't assume anything. I'll probably order up an 16lb, 18lb, and 20lb recoil spring and see what seems to work best, as well as replace the main spring.

The guy at the shop who sold it to me told me it is an Ithaca/Essex, which according to my research is not collector grade and I feel like I paid accordingly, but when I got it home I looked up the serial and it falls within the 1945 range of 1911A1 (Ithaca #2075104-2134403) according to http://www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/c...production.htm.

If it truly is a collector grade item, I'd really hate to shoot it and damage it, but on the other hand I'd hate to let go of it. I guess that just means I'll have to buy another gun?
I'm going to assume it is a kit build with an Ithaca slide on an Essex aftermarket frame, like this one http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=229166

If so it is a shooter with no collector value, so feel free to fire away.
              Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

It doesn't say Essex anywhere on it, it just has the serial on the frame and the Ithaca info on the slide.

It may be an original Ithaca frame; World War II frames weren't marked with the manufacturer by name. If you could post pictures that would help some of the knowledgeable folks here give you their opinion.

Since your trigger and sights at a minimum have been changed it's no longer as valuable as a collector firearm, but it may be able to be restored to it's original appearance. Serious collectors have a saying "it's only original once". So to them nothing you could do will bring it back to it's full value as if it was unmolested.
