i vote for the springer. they do have a lifetime warranty.

im a poor grad student myself, and i saved and got a colt for my first 1911. bought it off a fellow calgunner for $700. just keep checking the marketplace here until one comes up for cheap.

Not saying it is worth it to you, even near you, or what you want but there was a recent post about someone having a friend who was looking to sell a springfield armory loaded ultra compact for $600 >> http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=443310

Also, always check out gunbroker (online auction site for firearms) >> http://www.gunbroker.com/

save up for something you really want. don't settle when it comes to the 1911. cheap ones don't hold value. you will end up getting another 1911 when you get into it and end up with something better later on. just hold on to your money... it might just be a better investment.

Like everyone else, I'd save a little longer for something you really want. I bought a SA GI and ended up selling it for a Sig. You'll end up regretting the mil-spec sights.

Yes, you can. But novices don't know how to install them properly or lack the mind set to try and attempt it. It is almost like fixing or modifying a vehicle. You can do it yourself, save money and have that (I did it myself feeling of worth) or you can pay someone to do it and have that (I got it professionally done) feeling.

You may or may not get lucky with a RIA or a GI/Milspec Springfield (or with Kimber Custom II, for that matter). You won't have to rely on luck with something like a Dan Wesson. I got one of mine for $900 or $950 off the FS forum here, a used PM7. Check out Gunboards, too.
I agree. You are better off saving for a while and getting a higher end gun. In the long run you will be much happier. I have a Kimber and I am very happy with it. The out of the box quality can't be beat!

I've heard a lot of good things about RIA's, but i'm still a little iffy about guns from the Phillipines or Brazil.. but I never shot an RIA so I couldnt say, I did own a springfield mil spec and it was a complete jam-o-matic for years, couldnt get it fixed to work right, constant FTF's. Sold it at a loss. I now own 2 colts, and a Kimber and will never look back.

I shoot about a thousand rounds a month through my RIA Tactical and it is one of the best guns I've ever owned. For the price you can't beat it. Bud's has them for $425 shipped right now!

Have fun with whatever you get!

One thought to add... Springfield does have a lifetime warranty and they take care of their customers.

Save up and get something a bit higher end. you wont regret it. Junk will need to be worked on and would cost you money.

                          So does RIA.

Forget the stuff about "investing" in a nicer gun. Unless you buy the 1911 that was on Patton's hip when he stepped onto European soil you're not gonna get your money back. Buy a cheap one, have some fun and when you're better off financially you'll add a nicer one to the collection.

How many people here honestly just want to buy one gun? Have an RIA to beat the snot out of and loan to buddies at the range while you shoot your future Colt/SA/Wilson etc.

And if someone broke in and you ever had to shoot them you could just tell the cops you shot them with the RIA so it gets confiscated instead of your $1500+ gun.
