    Which 1911....

After lurking around for some time I've decided to come out of my shell and look for some knowledgeable opinions. I'm in the market for a low-end 1911. Will be used to have some fun in the mountains/range. Being a poor college student, my budget is low at 600$ max (transfer and dros will be 80 extra). After lots of research I have narrowed it down to a couple firearms. RIA tactical or Springfield G.I or milspec. Any other options that fit this range? Seems the Springfield's run 100$ steeper than the RIA. I've heard varying reports on both these; ranging from the good to the ugly. I've also shot both the at the range and was equally impressed (and accurate). Any input or other options would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a great day!

Jump right to Mil-spec (for new) or keep your eye on the for sale section for a nice used Kimber Custom 2 (my choice) or a Springfield loaded

You can occasionally find a used Kimber Custom II for a similar price. However, if I were you, I'd save up for a bit longer and get something you'd want to keep, and something you wouldn't have to sink money into upgrading just to make it function 100%. You may or may not get lucky with a RIA or a GI/Milspec Springfield (or with Kimber Custom II, for that matter). You won't have to rely on luck with something like a Dan Wesson. I got one of mine for $900 or $950 off the FS forum here, a used PM7. Check out Gunboards, too.

Get an RIA. Or save up and buy a Sig, colt, S&W, Dan Wesson, ect...

But since you are a college student and most likely young. If you are anything like me the longer you wait the more likely you will be to change your mind on which type or make of pistol you want. So, if I was in your situation I would jump in and buy a lower end 1911.

                            Springfield.

I bought TWO cheap 1911's, before I finally realized, that if I wanted one that actually WORKED (and didn't choke on hardball! ), I was gonna HAFTA outlay a few bucks.

                            Buy ONCE, cry ONCE.

i say buy used or save up. Cheap and 1911 is not a good combo. Since this is your first handgun and will probably be used for HD, make sure its something you can bet your life on
