My FNP 40 is very tight also. I haven't used anything greater than 10 round mags, so I can't tell you whether or not it is easier like it is with the XD.

                WHACK!
Ease it in and it's not going to "click" into place.

I don't know why people are loading up only 9 rounds. Load 10 rounds, give it a smack. That goes for all of my pistols with 10 round mags. You don't have to try to hit it out of the park, but just pushing it in is not going to work. You have to exert a little bit of force to get it in.
My daughters MP9 one factory mag loads 10 the other even with a LULA, no go, 9 only.

It really depends on the magazine, these non-standard magazines are an after thought to the original design, I doubt the manufactures really care, except for not loading 11, the market is too small.

This isn't just a XD problem. The 10 rounder magazines in Cali are all pretty tight to load into the gun with a full mag. Thats because of the 11th round fear!! It they make the mag just a little looser the 11th round might fit in. That said when the mag goes into the gun with a closed slide/bolt, the ammo is pushing against the bottom of the slide/bolt. Since the mag has no give it just makes it hard to load. Just load with the slide/bolt locked back.

Its not too difficult to feed a 14th round into an XD45 mag, I am not sure if it would chamber the round very well or not.

                        Should probably find out.

Blame our CA lawyers... this is a common problem for all of us. On my AR it is almost impossible to seat a 10-round mag on a closed bolt. Sucks for doing any kind of tac-reloads for sure.

you have to slap it in pretty hard. the first bullet in the mag pushes against the bottom of the slide so you have to fight that tension to get it seated. In my night stand I keep my mag in the well but not seated because i was worried about that tension upwards on the rear of the slide messing with the frame-slide fit. Im not sure if that is a legit issue or if im paranoid.

My XD.40 is more difficult to insert a loaded 10rounder with the slide forward, but not tough. I don't need to "slap it in", just a firm push. My buddies Xd .45 is no more difficult. The way I see it is if you can rack the slide back, inserting a loaded mag should not be a problem.
I used a friends pro mag in my Xd, it was (IIRC) a 25 or 30 rounder promag out in S.Dakota, fully loaded it inserted just the same as my 10rounders.(other than the fact that the hicap stuck out of the bottom of the grip 2-3 inches). Oh, and the fact that he laughed at me for my short little mags, I told him he was just compensating for a lack of something in his life.
