Transporting a handgun like this?

Ya I saw the laptop case. Very cool. I really only transport my firearms when going shooting, hunting or occasionally when traveling long distances. But if I was interested in keeping a handgun in my vehicle otherwise I may go for the more inconspicuous laptop like case.

So here is another question; do you have to have a reason for transporting a handgun in a locked case in your vehicle? I was a little confused in reading the PC about their being requirements for transporting to and from certain activities such as a firing range or hunting. That may have been for when carrying in a backpack locked unloaded concealed carry, but again I got lost in all the exceptions and definitions. Thus is it legal to transport a firearm locked and unloaded in a vehicle all the time like you used to be able to with a long gun in a gun rack? Or do you have to a specific purpose?

The only pita about having a truck is not having a trunk to lock your guns in. I use soft cases with lockable zippers for long arms and pistols (yea I know rifles don't need to be locked, but I pass two schools that are between my house and the first main street, and this is the fastest way out of my hillside neighborhood.) The cases don't need to be hard cases. The locks don't need to be anything special; I use the TSA 3 tumbler travel locks so I don't have to drag a bunch of keys around. I stick the pistols in rugs in a backpack and lock the backpack, then use a soft bag to carry ammo.

I thought that since magazines were considered 'part of the gun' that loaded mags are a no-no for transport, even if not in the magwell? Also, that ammo needs to be in a separate container from the gun?

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

i put mine in a rug and lock that, then put it in my range bag. zipped up.

Hm... I wonder if I could make the argument that a zip-loc bag is a "locking container."

I hope I am wrong with this Bros! I dont feel comfortable with the set-ups of the OP & post no.24. it looks like I can still insert my finger inside the bag if I spread the "Zipper leaders"( where the locks are hooked) apart.some zippers have a locking provision that you cannot insert fingers after locking.IANAL but read somewhere that " in no way a finger could be inserted after locking the gun." JMTC Bros!!

That would require a definition in law of 'secure' - and there is no such definition.

Again, if you don't think you could defend something as 'secure' in your own mind, probably you should select something else.
