Not really. A lot of county correction officers are not sworn or with peace officer status. If your ID has the two magic words "PEACE OFFICER", then you are good to go.

I think it comes down to "What defines law enforcement for purposes of off roster purchases?"
Corrections officers can carry standard capacity mags in their service sidearms and AR's, so I would imagine that since this is extended to them as part of the LE immunity, then off roster purchases would be allowed too?

Ok well "my friends" ID says Peace officer. and he is allowed to CCW everywhere. but, so are retired CO's and they cannot get off roster handguns.

So, I guess we will just go to the local gun store and find out for sure.
I have a feeling that it will all depend on the store. but I could be wrong.

          thanks guys.

OP - Repost this in the 2nd amend forum - You'll get better opinions there than you will get at a gun store - It seems that most of the bad info are emanating from some gun shops -

The CGF guys will chime in with the correct stance -

District Attorney's can buy off roster handguns and high cap mags and they are not sworn peace officers.

And to the OP, California State Correctional Officers can buy off roster handguns and high capacity magazines.

                  See part in bold.

                  Penal Code 12125
                  (a) Commencing January 1, 2001, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state for sale, keeps for sale, offers or exposes for sale, gives, or lends any unsafe handgun shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year.
                  (b) This section shall not apply to any of the following:
                  (4) The sale or purchase of any pistol, revolver or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person, if the pistol, revolver, or other firearm is sold to, or purchased by, the Department of Justice, any police department, any sheriff's official, any marshal's office, the Youth and Adult Correctional Agency, the California Highway Patrol, any district attorney's office, or the military or naval forces of this state or of the United States for use in the discharge of their official duties. Nor shall anything in this section prohibit the sale to, or purchase by, sworn members of these agencies of any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person.

That's because RETIRED peace officers can't buy off-roster...you have to be a "duly sworn AND COMPENSATED" peace officer for off-roster...in other words, active.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.

This thread is about correctional officers not District Attorney. Like I said before, not all county correctional officers are sworn in or with peace officer status (some.. not all). In the first post, OP didn't mention anything about STATE or COUNTY Correctional Officer. If you go to Proforce in Brea and want to purchase an off roster handgun, the first thing they look for is the word "PEACE OFFICER" on your ID. I have seen them turned down a bunch of "COUNTY" correctional officers for off roster handgun purchase. I was there last week and I saw them turned down a county correctional officer. The guy wanted to purchase a RUGER LCP.

                      This is correct.

If you have the 832 firearms certificate and keep your qualification current you can CCW legally, buy off roster handguns and high cap mags. DOJ confirmed it.
