"County" correctional officers are Probation officers and are not sworn in. Correctional Officers who are employed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are sworn Peace Officers and can carry off duty and buy off roster as well as standard capacity mags. They are CPOST certified.

Fubar- Probation Officers are sworn peace officer. They fall under PC section 830.5. They can carry off duty and purchase off roster handgun. I know a few SD/PD hire correction officers to work in jail but they are not sworn peace officer.

Yes. They need to complete pc832 during the academy to get the peace officer status.

Can a LE officer then do a ppt of that off roster firearm to a private citizen? Just a question.

Is that frowned upon between LEOs or does no one really care?

I get the impression that there is a little bit of a "grey market" of LEO's buying and selling off-list firearms for a profit.

                        All legal.

It isn't a straw purchase unless the intended recipient is a prohibited person.
In fact, I'm not a LEO and I could buy anyone in this thread a firearm as a gift and give it to them.
                            Legal.

Now setting up a side business where you buy off-roster handguns and sell them for profit is different, but that isn't what the OP is talking about.
