Glock 34 or a 17?

I have both - a G17RTF2 and a 3rd Gen 34, both with 3.5 lb triggers. So far, the additional sight radius hasn't seemed to make that much of a difference. Have to wait until I start shooting USPSA this season to find out if it makes a difference there.

That is just incorrect, 34 will run perfectly with the typical wally world special (WWB/federal FMJ's).

That being said GLOCK 34 FTW. If its a range gun, go with the extra velocity offered extra length. When shooting steel, you can definitely hear the difference in power you get from the extra barrel length. After some of those crazy barrel lengthed Lugers, Mauser's, p210 and the G17L, G34 is probably the most powerful 9mm handgun available on the market.

Sorry can someone explain the compensated thing, especially like a 17C and on a 9mm? The way I see it, if your carrying a 17C, your carrying an oversized G26/G19.

My two cents:

I've owned a G17 for quite some time.

I used to own a G34, sold it, missed it, bought another one, sold that one, too. Why? Because my muscle memory was programmed to the way my G17 recoiled, and the G34 was just the right combo of same and different (felt the same, recoiled in a slightly different manner) that I didn't like shooting it.

If I had to start from scratch, I'd get the G34 and train on that. Longer sight radius makes a big difference. The extra doodads (extended controls, 3.5# connector) are nice, but it costs little to upgrade a G17 with the same. I only sold my two G34's because of all the trigger time I had with my G17.

In short, get the G34.

Don't the top ports on the 17C just vent some of the gasses to counter muzzle rise during recoil? Not much more than that I'd think, in principle.

There is always the option to put an extended (and/or ported) barrel into a stock Glock 19 or 17... but you won't gain the benefits of the longer slide/sight radius, I suppose.

The G34 is the gun for gun games, USPSA and IDPA. The longer sight radius does help. However, you can put the 3.5lb connector and extended slide stop and G21 mag release on a G17, but it still has a shorter sight radius. Also a G34, G17L, G22, G35 and a G24 top end will fit on a G17 frame. I have been running a G24 9mm conversion/G17 frame hybrid for a while. It is not legal in IDPA and has to run Open minor in USPSA. But the 8.2" sight radius makes easy work of B zone plates at 40 yards.... I have 3 G17's and had run a G34 for several years.

i shoot pretty low quality 115 grain loads out of my G34 all day long, don't see any difference.

In my personal opinion, the only advantage that the G17 has over the 34 is that it is smaller. And that is only a good thing if you are trying to conceal it (but really, who conceals a G17 anyway?), or you are put off by the little bit of extra weight on the 34.

Outside of that, I think the G34 wins in every other category. But if you find a G17 that is $150-$200 less, I would go with it. There is not a huge difference

Since you are using it only as a range gun the 34 is an easy choice for me. I started with a 17 and sold it to fund a 34. For just range duty the long sight radius is better.

I'm with zfields though. For a range gun I prefer a steel frame. CZ 75 is a good fit for that.

Glock 34 all the way, and I'm not bias I have access to a G17, but I love the Glock 34. You can try it out if you want PM just supply the ammo. Above all the extra sight radius, longer slide, 4.5 trigger, I think it has softer recoil love it!

Actually, there are some that feel that the G17 is a bit more nimble, especially when shooting multiple targets in gun games. The difference is definitely slight, but if you imagine how cumbersome it'd be to transition between multiple targets at speed with an 8" revolver, it's kinda like that. IMHO, the difference is outweighed by the added accuracy with the longer sight radius, however.

funny I had the the same question. I have a glock 19 now and like it but would how much less would the recoil be on a 17 or 34 compared to to the 19
