    M&P vs GLOCK

I've been interested in getting a pistol like a GLOCK Gen3 17 for a while now. Not of legal age to buy it yet, I think I should add that.

Anyway, I am aware that the M&P pistol is a good conteder since I want a full-size frame anyway. I also don't know much about the M&P other that it's a polymer based gun that competes agaisnt the GLOCK and all the other combat tupperware.

I've never had the fortune to shoot an M&P and I do want to rent one if I have the chance. (I have shot a GLOCK and am familiar with its operation).

Basically, I want a pistol that has the things a GLOCK offers: simplicity, reliability, moderate cost, and ease of use.

Can the GLOCK and the M&P be considered equals, like Pepsi and Coca-cola are? Or is there one pistol that offers something that the other doesn't?

Are the M&P magazines also steel lined?
Does the M&P have a similar trigger mechanism and minimal user interfaces?
Are the sights on the M&P equal to or better than GLOCK sights?
Do you have to depress the trigger to take down? And is the take down as simple?
What about the rifling inside the barrel? Traditional or polygonal for the M&P?
Is the finish on the M&P as resistant as GLOCK's tennifer?
What about comparing cost between the two?

If there might be a Calgunner that happens to own both examples, which one do you prefer and why? Also, if anyone wants to add any helpful/constructive comments, please feel free.

I just figured that the M&P deserves a look in my quest to find the "AK of pistols"

    Thanks

Follow the link in my sig, I've owned various Glocks for the past 10 years and over 30,000+ rounds worth. Now I prefer the M&P series which I consider more ergonomic and a little easier to shoot fast. But I have to disclose that w/o Apex's parts and service, I'd still own Glocks.
My opinions are my own and do not represent the position of other companies I may be involved with.

Some of your answers can be found from their website. As for me, I prefer M&P and I used to be a Glock owner. Both pistols are excellent and it will last you forever long as you take care of it. As for sight, I prefer M&P Novak sight than factory Glock sight because I like 3 dot system. As for trigger, I think stock M&P trigger and reset system is terrible compare to Glock. I am waiting APEX tactical to come back from their SHOT show so I can order their RAM to improve my trigger reset. However, factory Glock trigger and reset is not that bad at all. At the end, go with the model that fits you best in your hands. If you can go to the local range and rent those two models. Most range will have M&P and Glock to rent for sure. I like M&P again because it comes with three different back straps and it feels little heavier than Glock. I really like the weight of M&P in my hands.

I would go to a gun store and see which one fits your hand the best. Don't forget that the M&P has 3 different grip inserts, so try it with the different sizes as well. Or, even better, got to a range that rents them and shoot them side by side. No, not at the same time. Everybody is different, and you might find that one of them, or any of the several other flavors of combat tupperware suit you better. In terms of overall performance, it is more like diet coke vs. coke zero. I use the full sized glocks because I still have a bunch of high-cap mags for them. When I went shopping for a sub-compact in a different caliber, I tried several. I ended up with the M&P compact version. It just fit better. YMMV.

Just a heads up, but something may feel great in your hand yet shoot horribly.

              What Caliber?

in 9mm Glock is "Best of Breed".
In .45ACP 1911 is "Best of Breed".

                In your opinion
I have ~6,000 rounds of experience with a Customized Les Baer
                Over 30,000 with Glocks
                ~2,000 with my M&P

So I think I'm qualified to disagree with your opinion. Do you have any trigger time with an Apex worked M&P?

Are the M&P magazines also steel lined?
                  Yes

Does the M&P have a similar trigger mechanism and minimal user interfaces?
                  Yes

Are the sights on the M&P equal to or better than GLOCK sights?
Better - M&P comes with metal sights, Glock = plastic

Do you have to depress the trigger to take down? And is the take down as simple?
In the M&P there is an additional takedown lever that must be moved within the gun, you don't need to pull the trigger. Either way is not a deal breaker for me.

What about the rifling inside the barrel? Traditional or polygonal for the M&P?
                  Traditional

Is the finish on the M&P as resistant as GLOCK's tennifer?
Probably not, but it's still good.

What about comparing cost between the two?
                  The same

I recently had the same dilemma and ended up buying both (G19 and M&P45.)

The Glock trigger isn't as bad as people say. The various inexpensive tweaks don't make it a whole lot better either (3.5 connector, NY1 spring.) The $0.25 polish job makes the most difference. The reset is very pronounced.

The M&P trigger isn't that bad either, and one can also do a $0.25 polish job on the parts. The reset is very vague, I have yet to buy the APEX parts but I will very soon.

+1 on this. Most people always claim this gun feels great in my hand but shoot like crap at the range.

I own both and I love them both. I prefer Glock over M&P because I can buy all the parts online for dirt cheap and replace/work on it.

                    1. Proven, known platform.
                    2. Availability of rimfire conversions for training.
                    3. Availability of support/aftermarket equipment (holsters, sights, etc.)
                    4. Relative cost. (LEO price: $399 with 3 mags)
                    5. Lightweight & concealable.
                    6. Availability of larger & smaller sized models with identical controls & magazine/holster compatibility.

No other platform that I know of meets these needs as they apply to my situation better, so it was an easy choice.

Are the sights on the M&P equal to or better than GLOCK sights? M&P BETTER
Do you depress the trigger to take down? And is the take down as simple? NOT ON M&P. Take down a tad easier on GLOCK.
What about the rifling inside the barrel? Traditional or polygonal for the M&P? SAME, TRAD..
Is the finish on the M&P as resistant as GLOCK's tennifer? MELLONITE, unsure how good it stacks up against Tennifer.
What about comparing cost between the two? They Cost about the same.

I own both G17 and M&P45. Love the M&P much more.

M&P feels better, shoots better, more acurate, less perceived recoil, more ergonomic, more fun to shoot, sexier, etc. Put it this way, I shot a small orange at 150 yards with an M&P45 standing free handed, twice in one ten round magazine. No BS! I had like 8 witnesses and even had a bet, lol. I was amazed.

Both excellent platforms. As others have mentioned, it really depends on your personal 'perceived' value between them both. The APEX kit makes the MP shine. 25 cent trigger job and a 3.5 connector make the Glock perfect for me. In the end if you cant figure it out, flip a coin and go out and run them hard. YMMV.

I never bought into the Glock hype and just tried all the handguns that were available to rent or owned by friends.

                            - I would never own a Glock is the result.
                            - The M&P 9 and M&P 45 (I own the M&P 45) was more accurate for me and also felt more comfortable in my hands. I liked the way it set up for me than a Glock did.

Try before you buy is all I have to say and don't just do a few rounds, shoot them out and really do a comparison...You will probably end up with the M&P and for God's sake when trying the M&P check out the different grip options...There are 3 and that will help a lot in your decision.

That should be a factor. If both guns performed equally looks then come into play and I would get the best looking gun at that point. When you spend money you need to fulfill certain criteria: ergos, comfort, capabilities, looks, etc.
