I can recommend Springfield Armory on THIS THREAD alone!
*Update* Accident on page 3 Range report on page 16 I don't post here much, just lurk the forums because I've wanted to add a 1911 to my collection :) I decided on a Stainless Springer 1911 GI because I like it's simplicity and price. I DROS'd it 11 days ago and picked it up today... Had...

Get what feels right to you. I would try out a few different ones at a local range. I have a kimber tactical custom II and love it. I feel its right in line with the SA TRP which is a few hundred bucks more. I looked at a SA TRP and didnt like the milling on the grips. 20 lines per inch vs. kimbers 30lpi. both are great guns but i just liked the way the kimber felt in my hands. best way is to got try them out and see whats best for you. doesnt matter what anybody else says.

I have a Kimber Tactical II, a very nice gun if you've got the bones.

It's got frontstrap checkering, checkering under the trigger gaurd, night sights, ambi safety, mag well, night sights, and a lightweight alloy frame.

It's about a half pound lighter than a standard 1911 so it points easier in both one and two handed shooting. Recoil is not appreciably more. The only thing I dislike about the gun is that the factory magazine is absolutely horrible. It would never reliably feed the first round, and would often fail to feed subsequent rounds. It also felt very cheap, the spring is very gritty feeling. I suggest you get some good magazines with your 1911, Chip McCormick's are good I hear.

Just curious........has anyone ever purchased a car based on opinions of people they've never met?

I like to look the car over, drive it and then decide if it's the right one for me.

you can find any car easily and test drive a car for free. even if u can find all the pistols on your list in one convenient place, u then have to pay to shoot each one. also when u test drive a car you don't have to pay for the ammo (gas)

.... and even if you do test drive a car for say an hour, you don't get the longterm reliability input, or pick up on the small knick knacks that are positive/negatives about the car. then there is the long term support input that you get on the web that you don't get test driving a car.

i bought my TRP based solely on extensive web research and without ever seeing one in person much less shooting one. all i can say is I am very happy with my purchase.

question i got to ask is are you sure you want a 1911?

only reason I got one is because I love guns and no collection is complete without a 1911. My 1911 is my primary open carry weapon because it is very pretty, and i like to carry a pretty gun as a sidearm. much like the way Patton carried his pearl handle revolvers

And since, how many other 1911's in that price range have you shot?

I've never met anyone at a range who didn't ask me if I wanted to try the gun if I expressed an interest in it. No $$ involved. There is no way to know anything about long term results by a sampling of a few or even a hundred pistols when manufacturers make 40K or 50K a year.

Years ago, I was very, very happy with my Kimber Target until one of my friends had me shoot his Baer.

and am i suppose to pull my hair over this? before i bought my 1911 i did try many cheaper ones such as Norinco's, Rock Island, and a milspec Springfield. to me my $1500 TRP does not feel much different than a $300 Norinco. At 10 yards I can still hit paper with a Norinco. I am willing to bet the $300 Norinco is probably just as reliable too.

My TRP is my favorite handgun but I am not in love with 1911's like some people. My TRP is probably the only 1911 i'll ever buy. there are people that test and test and test and pulled their hair over which 1911 to get before settling on a TRP. I just took the short cut.

I'd suggest you not pull any hair! When you get to my age, you'll treasure every hair you've got.

So you drove a Yugo, a Geo, a Neon and bought a Cadillac and didn't notice a difference.......that's great and it's good that you've got all you wanted.

If 10 yards is the distance you like to shoot at then you're all set. I shoot at 50ft., 25 yds, and 50 yds and can notice the difference in what I'm shooting in 2 shots.

it's more like i tried a WRX, a Mitsi EVO, and settled on a Viper. The WRX and EVO are only slightly slower but a lot cheaper, and probably a lot more reliable

but then again I will not be using the Viper/TRP that much, I just want a high performer, and I like the looks. it feels good knowing that i have a pretty gun/car by my side.

                          *note: i don't really have a viper

a viper is more like a les baer or wilson. don't get me wrong, TRP have good reputations, but it's not a true custom.

Sorry, but to me, a SA Loaded or base Kimber Custom would be the equiv. to the rice rockets you mentioned. The guns you tried are a step down.

But back to the topic........I recommend any 1911 that fits you best and you shoot best with. Brand don't matter.

a base kimber or springfield is like an integra or base wrx. a higher end kimber or springfield is like a suped up rice rocket, like a sti or evo. a high end piece that is custom like a les baer or wilson is like a viper or m6 status.

                                nice, real nice, to PIMP

i guess, i have a real nice 1911 (kimber tactical custom II) and i did have a Sti...

next piece is difinitely a les baer premier II 1/2 inch garanty with hardchrome which is like a M6 with an exhaust rollling on 22's. unfortunately, i drive a CR-V now so I can lug my family around.
