1911 Recommendations

I appologize, I didn't even realize that I used the term "crappy" like I did. That wasn't the context I was trying to use, I was trying to say that you can appreciate a nice model w/o having to start at the bottom, And when I said this I mean handguns in general, should we start out with High Points so we can appreciate an XD or a Glock? I don't think so. Do I think GI models or similiar are crappy? Not at all
Same with cars, I don't need to start out with a Yugo to appreciate a Lexus or even a Honda...

I've shot every single Les Baer that is on the CA approved list, and a few that aren't. I've shot the TRS quite a bit (for not owning one, 600+ rounds). I will be the first to say that the TRS is the best 1911 currently made, and if I had the money to toss around it would be my next gun. However, I don't have the money to toss around, and I assure you that when comparing my SA or my Colt to a TRS, while they pale slightly in comparison, they don't come up in the "crappy" category. Do the poor folk a favor and be a little less repugnant in the way you describe their guns.

Kimber Custom Target II

If I were looking for my first 1911 for under $800 that would be used for targets at the range, I would buy a Kimber Custom Target II. These generally sell at just under $800 new and have a nice trigger and big adjustable target sights.

I really like my S & W 1911. I have always been a S&W fan.
Shoots great. No problems.
Great gun for IDPA or USPSA Single Stack.

I myself would get a milspec and trick it out with a bunch of parts....Why? Cause its fun working on guns and upgrading them yourself (which you can do with the 1911 its easy).

For around $800, look at Kimber Custom II or TLE II (rail model cost more), Springfield loaded, and S&W 1911 .45. They look similar, so pick the ones that appeal to you the most and then check out the actual guns and see which one fits you the best. Keep in mind that the frame come in different material and weight differently.

Kimber. Ive owned my fair share of colts, Springers, and Kimber. Shot plenty more. For the money Kimber is going to be better fit, better finished, and more accurate than the springer. I dont know too many springfield owners that havent HAD to use the warranty and I dont know too many kimber owners that have had to. Plus if you like a high grip the front strap on the kiimber is cut a bit higher than the springer. The new colts Ive seen seem to be even higher than the kimbers actually the new colts look to have an upcut wich i really like.

This only pertains to me and maybe some other shooters. As far Kimbers I found their frames and the thumb safety they use is uncomfortable with a high thumb hold (strong side thumb on top of thumb safety) I'm not sure its the way they cut the frames but when shooting more than a 100 rounds it gets uncomfortable and rubs the joint of my thumb. No probs with Baers, SA Custom guns, SA production guns, Colts, or SW1911's.

You know the "safe queen" comment makes me think you might do well to consider a gun like Les Baer, that is fun just to handle, and admire, even without actually shooting it that often. You can really feel the difference between it and a Kimber, or especially Springfield. Compare a TRP to a Premier II and you will easily see which one is worth the money. Look at the details, and the Baer will just blow SA away, not even close. But the prices are a lot close than you'd believe, at least the TRP at Canyon Sports.
I want a Colt, but not any of the ones they sell here, too bad! I will probably buy next a used 70's Colt, or even earlier like late 60's if I can find one.

When it comes to production 1911s, I favor Kimber. Under $800 I'd probably look at the SW1911, Kimber Custom II, Springfield Loaded and the Dan Wessons. They all feel different in the hand and shoot a little different too. Best would be to try as many 1911s as you can, either from friends or forum members and make your decision based upon what you enjoyed most.

I also think that if you're going to be buying just one 1911, might as well get a higher end one. Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom. Handle them and see which you like best.

yes, drop the money on a Les Baer Premier II, comes with everything that you will ever need and want. my idea is just get that one nice gun that you will shoot forever.

I love my Kimber Raptor and my Colt combat elite. A buddy of mine has a SA that he had redone by wilson thats just awesome to shoot. But with 1911's you can never seem to just have one so just go with the one you want the most thats within your price range

i have 3 Kimbers and think they're great.

Custom II can be bought for $700 NIB.

Otherwise a Springfield would be my second choice, Colt third and if you have teh money an Ed Brown or Les Baer.

yes for under 1g, I would go with Kimber. I have a tactical custom II, and it shoots great.
