Which 9mm?

I just moved to Cali from Mass and am looking for a 9mm. What's the best deal going?

My picks:
-Glock 17RTF2.

-Beretta 92fs.

In Mass we can't have any pistols at all. I am now in Cali and am enthused about the idea of buying a 9mm, but don't have a clue. Of course, I know I should just buy a Glock, but I wonder if anybody knows of a better deal.

Go to a local range and try some out, they should run about 10 bucks each to rent + ammo.

It greatly depends on your price range, to be honest.
Under $600 - Glock all day long, XD or M&P are good options too.
Over $600 - Sig, HK, FNH, CZ... List goes on. It depends on what you want, what options, what styles, so on and so forth. For a first time pistol buyer, I would HIGHLY recommend a Glock 19. Very basic, very reliable, well worth every penny. Learn how to be proficient with it, and enjoy it. Then after you feel comfortable with a pistol, and know what you are doing... I say step up your game and get yourself one of them sexy Sig pistols.

In Mass you're not allowed to have pistols at all? please elaborate.

Unless you're planning on CCW I recommend a G17(G17's can also be CCWd no problem).

Everything depends on your price range. My 9mm favorites are the G17rtf2, Beretta 92fs, Browning Hi-Power and the HK P30L(most expensive of the 4).

I've got six 9mm's... the only ones I still shoot are the CZ SP01, Sig P226 & Glock 17 Gen4... the rest just collect dust. Get some range time as "Nazgulnarsil" suggested.

I'm a cocked and locked kind of Guy. Make sure to give John M. Browning's Hi-Power a try. Just about every 9MM has taken something from this design.

You'll get the BEST prices here on PPT (person to person transfers) on Calguns.

Most used guns are BARELY used, if in doubt - offer to pay a smith at a range to check it out. (95% of the time they'll do it for free).

No taxes, only a $35 DROS and you are gtg.

But you have to know what you love, and that is done as suggested above - rent / borrow and shoot whatever you can get your hands on.

Good that you have picked your ammo selection first - ranges rent for cheap, but make you shoot their ammo. If you wanted a 9mm, 40 , 45 - they'd sell you 3 bags of ammo for... $57? But that's still cheaper than buying the wrong gun.

All guns are awesome, reliable, but have very different controls and some you will just plain shoot better with...

I think most will recommend the Glock 19 for your first 9mm. The Glock 19 is called a "compact" by Glock, but it is basically a full-size pistol. I have large hands, and all of my fingers easily fit on the G19. Also, if you ever get your concealed carry permit, the G19 is much better for carry than the larger G17.

Beretta 92's and M9's are good guns, but the Glocks are much better (only my opinion of course). Berettas are DA/SA, with a decocker and safety-- which basically makes them the weirdest guns to manipulate. Glocks, on the other hand, are super-simple to use. I believe that the simplicity of the Glock makes it the safest pistol for both new and experienced shooters.

Don't overthink it. Get a Glock!
