Which 9mm?

Well as always everybody says buy a Glock or Sig,XD,HK or whatever. I'm not saying their not good guns but if your going to be handling and shooting different ones today why not pick up a Ruger or 2. May try a P95 and the SR9. If your looking for something in the compact size try the SR9c. Their all good guns at a fair price. Thats just my 2 cents worth.

Haha - I knew you would get your Rugers in here. Good on you! +1 on P95 or the all-steel P89 (if you can find one, they are inexpensive)..

My two favorite pistols I own by far - Beretta 92FS Inox (also have a Brig) and a Ruger P90 (.45 that can outshoot most 1911's..).

These Glock guys get a little wound up.. But do your homework and try a striker, DA/SA, and 1911. All have different controls..

Beretta 92's and M9's are good guns, but the Glocks are much better (only my opinion of course). Berettas are DA/SA, with a decocker and safety-- which basically makes them the weirdest guns to manipulate. Glocks, on the other hand, are super-simple to use. I believe that the simplicity of the Glock makes it the safest pistol for both new and experienced shooters.

Don't overthink it. Get a Glock!

Glocks are pretty much the standard that most guns are compared to (especially in the $500 range), so that is definitely saying something about the gun. Most everything else is just preference.

Personally, I love my SigPro2022. I know the gun gets a bad rep in CA due to an incident that happened with Turners getting a bad batch.. but for me its the one gun that made me think the rest of my Sigs were pointless to have. I've had 3 P226s (and a USP) and now I have none. I just shoot the SP2022 better and its functioned more reliably than anything else I've owned short of my revolver.

Yea, they're neat, unfortunately moonclips are almost mandatory for these due to how the casings are. Would be a pain just trying to shoot a casual range session and you're not really practicing reloading. Even worse if you happen to get one that comes with flimsy moonclips with no after-market support (Taurus comes to mind) - otherwise I'd be all over 9mm revolvers.

Going to chime in with something:

I bought a 22LR Ruger Mark III first. It gave me a reason to be at the range every weekend for VERY cheap, and a reason to get a membership to the local range. Most ranges will have FREE RENTALS with a membership, were you only pay for ammo.

Plink with a 22LR inexpensively until you've rented anything and everything that looks like something you'd be interested in buying and then buy the 9mm of your now educated dreams.

Initially I was concerned about a 22LR, but I can't find a single shooter who doesn't already own one that goes to the range more than twice a year. Inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to operate and loads of fun to shoot!

I'm in the same situation as you and my best advice is DON'T RUSH into a purchase.. just take your time and do your research.. with that I mean don't sit online and read countless range reports and grab suggestions about what's right for you.. get out to the range pick out 5 choices in the caliber your leaning towards and spend a day with each one.. take your time and try to put about 200+ rounds through it before you move onto the next choice.. the best range report is your own.. you will be able to knock guns off your list in no time.. I been leaning towards the XD-45 and I finally gave in to trying glocks and now I'm fond of the G19.. also had some fun with the ruger SR models.. hit the range and take your time or else we will see you and your new purchase in the market place up for sale and you starting another thread asking for new suggestions.

I'm a fellow Mass transplant too and didn't get into firearms until I got to left coast. Thought about getting a gun in Mass but it was such a pain in the *** I just never got around to it. My dad and grandfather both own handguns and shotguns in Mass.

Narrow it down to plastic or steel/alloy frame. Try them all and get one. Once you get one they start to multiply so get a good gun safe too. My vote is Sig P229 if you have the cash or XD if your on a budget. Another option is a CZ 75 compact or P01.
