Get a 9mm. Ammo is half as much. $160 for 1000 rounds of Remington UMC. I own guns in both calibers. I prefer the 9mm because I can actually afford(kind of) to shoot it. I also have just as much faith in my 9mm hollowpoints as my .45 hollowpoints.

My first gun was a Glock 17. I opted for the larger calibers but I was most accurate with this caliber than the others. Shot placement > caliber size. there are plenty excellent 9mm rounds for different occasions. however , my next firearm is going to be a .45 ACP G21

This.+1 CZ SP-01 .45 is scarce and is better for those that reload, if you want to shoot a lot. 9mm can be found anywhere, fun to shoot, and will be much cheaper. I have a .45 but shoot 9mm and .40 at the range. Mostly 9mm.

My first handgun was a RIA 1911, and so far it's my only handgun. My dad has a Glock 19 that I've shot a few times, and tbh, I like the feel of my .45 coming out of a 1911. Hopefully my next handgun will be a wheel gun in .357, but thats a whole different kettle of fish.

Just some things to keep in mind tho, 9mm is WAY cheaper then .45 however, I have been feeding my 1911 a steady diet of Tula .45 that I buy from CTD for $12 a box, it's still not as cheap as 9mm, but pretty darn close. Something else to remember is pick the gun you like that fits your hand first. Out of every handgun I held, the 1911 fits perfectly in my hand. Unlike most revolver, the magazine/cylinder realease isn't too far away from my thumb, It also doesn't have the drastic grip angle that glocks have (This is a personal preferance, alot of people seem to like the grip angle on Glocks). You also need to ask yourself if you want your pistol to be heavy or not. Just about all modern day pistol are made mostly of polymere, yes they are light, but their recoil tends to be more "snappy" whereas the recoil of my 1911 is more of a gentle push since the weight of the gun helps absorb the recoil.

P.S. I wouldn't really buy into the notion of "stopping power." Yeah handguns are weak compared to rifles, but weather it's 9mm or .45 or a .22, whoever gets shot by one isn't going to be a very happy camper. Hell, I don't even like getting hit with BB guns, can you imagine how much it would suck to get hit with even a .22?

Given similar energies and bullet composition/shape, a heavier bullet will penetrate further than a lighter one. .45 acp averages both greater energy and mass. For example, your average JHP 230 grain .45 acp will go thru both doors of your average sedan and easily 8+ sheets of drywall. If you are worried about overpenetration, either calliber will send jhp/fmj through multiple walls. Look for specialty ammunition like Glasser rounds or Frangibles. Ultimately, its all about shot placement, when can you shoot better, which can you shoot faster. For some, .44 magnum, others .25 acp. Which one is for you? Time to hit the range and find out.

Take this video with a grain of salt. The density of a stack of cards is much higher than living animal tissue. 9mm is the smart choice all things considered but do use hollow points for personal protection!

Oh, and for my first HG I went with a Ruger MK3 22/45. Cheap to shoot, easy to learn how to use a pistol properly, no problems with ammo.


Then I bought a 45. Completely different ball game. I was looking for a Glock 19/26 and ended up with a 30. I like shooting it, but it is expensive. If you do go with .45, SAVE YOUR BRASS. You'll eventually end up reloading. I shot a Glock 23, and it was a bit snappy, I'd rather shoot my 30 over it. Stick with a 9mm if you want to save a bit on ammo, and have a gun that a lot of other people can pick up and shoot easily, and you won't cry about them dumping a couple of mags down range.

I'd still say pick up a .22 to plink and have fun with, or at least get a conversion kit after you get your Glock. Shoot, you could get a conversion kit for a .45 glock and shoot .40 and save money that way, from lone wolf.
