Hello, new and with a question.

I'm moving to the SF Bay Area in February and I've already read up on all of the laws and so forth regarding bringing firearms into the state. I only own two pistols, which I'm going to bring in my luggage on the plane in the manner that the airline requires and then register them by the form.

I have quite a bit of ammo and want to know if it would be illegal to ship it to myself in a moving box, inside a crate with my other belongings, given that new law regarding handgun ammunition(which I do hope firearm owners raise hell about).

Also, there isn't a law prohibiting you from keeping a loaded handgun in the house for self defense I hope?

Thank you in advance for any information.

You can ship the ammo to yourself

All ammo has to go GROUND. I use FED EX Ground. When I go on vacation out of STATE I visit Gun Stores looking for good deals on ammo. If I find a good deal I box it up and visit Fed Ex Kinkos. Off it goes.

Now, there 'may' be a weird law in the city limits of San Francisco....You might google for that. San Francisco is almost Communist with their backward laws against weapons. For me, I would ship it and keep it on the down-low, but that's just ME. Not you. I can't speak for anyone else.

You can have a loaded weapon in your home, no problem. If kids are around, you might be required to have a GUN LOCK/GUN SAFE..etc..check that law as well. Always a good idea when non gun people are around or kids.

If you're coming from a FREE STATE, buy a few OFF ROSTER handguns to legally bring. I know it's a lot of money but this is a good legal way to get a handgun before moving here.

    Welcome to Cal Guns.!

I believe that you will need to bring 10 round magazines for your guns as well.

You may want to disassemble you standard capacity mags for use as rebuild kits, or when traveling out of state to shoot. If you previously lived CA, you may be ok.

I'm sorry for asking this, but ... is it too late to make other plans? There is little reason to move to this state ...

And, yes ... I am serious. Take it from another transplant in CA ... it isn't worth it.

Yeah, no kids. So the new law doesn't effect shipping ammunition to myself if I already own it out of CA and just for ordering online essentially in state?

What would be considered 'off roster' that I could bring in?

And thank you, I'll be sticking around.

Yes, I knew about that already. I have two Glocks, so getting 10 round mags and selling the high caps is easy.

              See http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/in...e_Handgun_List and http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

Generally, any semi-autos introduced after Jan 1, 2007 that do not have BOTH a magazine disconnect (cannot fire with magazine removed) AND a 'loaded chamber indicator' will not be on the Roster.

The obvious examples are 1911 models from various manufacturers, since neither the MD nor the LCI are 'traditional' features of the Browning design.

The Ca DOJ has this roster to see which handguns are allowed to be purchased from an FFL while the purchaser resides in California.

This link is found on the CalGuns home webpage before you enther the forum.

while it is legal to purchase handguns that are NOT on the roster, not all FFLs are willing to go through that process (single shot exemption). There are a few on Calguns here that are (Valkyrie Arms, PRK Arms)

The guns that are exempted from the roster are single shot pistols that meet the minumum barrel length and overall length. You can legally modify it back to the pistol's original state after you purchase it. Which is how I got my Glock Gen4.

When shipping the ammo you must also mark the box stating that there is ammo in it. You can Google the info on that. It has to say something like: Small Arms Munitions and ORMD
                  Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Do not sell your hi-caps. Just disassemble them and keep them that way. You may re-assemble them when you travel outside of the state.

I like the bit about San Francisco being communist.

So if I limited my high caps to 10, they'd be legal even though they are high caps and could be turned back?

They must be permanently altered to 10, or remain disassembled.
