    2000-3000 would be budget.
having one custom build for me is probably not going to work since i havnt shot too many 1911's.

i'm trying to only have one nice 1911, want to do it right the 1st time.

I like the Wilson and the Ed Brown for a high dollar gun. Can't go wrong with any of them listed here though. Obviously your best bet is to try a range and see if you have someone local with one that will let you touch it! Each gun feels and shoots different to each person. You might not like any of them......

I have two Ed Browns, a Wilson, Dan Wesson, and Springer Pro. I could have any other available. I would get the Springer Pro, no question.

Keep in mind that at the high-end, after paying prices like that, few are going to say what they bought was a let down.

          LOL.

          You'll want another, trust me.

In any case, most of the folks on this thread are right.

But when it comes down to it, with your price range, a Springfield Pro is top choice.

Once you're done with #1 1911, your succeeding guns will all be custom built, I promise you.

Quite frankly you could get by just fine with a $1000 Springfield Armory, S&W, or Dan Wesson. However if you really want to get into fine hand built 1911 there are plenty of great choices. Wilson, Nighthawk, Baer, Brown and S&W's Performance Center. As for which one - Ford vs Chevy. All will shoot better than 99% of their owners, all will be dead reliable, and all are backed by great service. Pick the one with the features and finish that you like and that fits your hand the best.

This is one of those proverbial "buy once, cry once" opportunities.

I was shooting one of Ed Brown Kobra Carry pistols last week, and continue to be impressed with its accuracy and dependability. I own a pair of them, along with three other Ed Brown 1911s. I sent one of them back to Ed Brown for the Gen III coating, which is the one I was most recently shooting:

Attention to detail, quality parts, and the lack of front cocking serrations are what attract me to Ed Brown. Their 1911s include things I want/need, and lack things I don't want. Their 1911s are ideal, at least for me. I'd sell off all of my other 1911s before I sold one of my five Ed Browns.
