    Someone say yes

I had a friend who's grandpa past away. His grandpa lives in Washington and has a Taurus 500 that nobody wants and my buddy offered it to me. As you know, that model is not on the current DOJ list and it has been discontinued. Is there anyway I can get this gun? A free .500 MAG!!!!!

Short answer... Nope not going to happen. Long answer yes, if you know someone that is LEO. It could be FFL transferred to a CA LEO and then he could transfer it to you in a PPT.

Ok, I know a LEO that is an FFL. What exactly is a private party transfer? Is the gun still registered and legal like that?

        Yes
PPT is not regulated by the roster

SO have your buddy PPT it to you.

How do you do that, through an FFL? Does it still require a DROS?

So am I missing something? Because it sounds like a PPT would be basically him giving me the gun with a reciept or documentation?

1 - Get your LEO buddy (not the astro sign) Law Enforcement Officer. To use his own FFL or a gun shop he is familiar with.
2 - The owner of the 500 Smith will send it to your LEO's FFL. It will be DROS'ed to him. It is now in his legal possession. He can now PPT it. LEO's that PPT (Private Party Transfer) many off list guns per year can send a red flag to the DOJ.
3- He does a PPT to you and you DROS the gun in your name. All legal.

                  It's a 50 cal handgun though isn't it? Doesn't that automatically make non-transferable?

No, the "50 Ban" only applies to .50 BMG. Other .50 caliber cartridges, rifle, pistol, or otherwise, are good to go in CA as long as their host firearm is legal.

Your buddy would have to meet you in CA at the FFL in order to PPT that handgun to you. If he ships to an FFL then it's no longer a private party transfer.

Ok so it sounds like the only way to get it legally would be to ask him to go up to Washington and bring it back down to him, and then ask a big favor from my buddy who is an FFL LEO. I don't think that will work. He's pretty skeptical as it is with off list ar's.

No your buddy can have the gun shipped to a CA FFL. That is legal if the inter familal (sp?) exemption is used for the transfer.

Ok sounds like a lot of headache, maybe I'll just buy one like I was going to. Whats $1000 right, lol. Now I'll ask this because he will ask me, what kind of problems will he have if he keeps it for himself? He lives in California, but after all it was his Grandpa's, he's not going to throw it away.
