    If I Only Had...

A .45 acp what ammo would be my best chance against a black bear. 230gr JHP or 230gr FMJ or something of less weight and why? thanks.

I don't think I would go near a black bear with a 45acp. It has to be a 44mag or bigger

On a more serious note, I wouldn't pack a gun chambered in .45 ACP into bear country.

for some perspective, this one came out yesterday on Liveleak. A grizzly charging:

Also last month, a backpacker in Alaska did manage to kill a Grizzly with a gun chambered in .45 ACP. I suppose it is all about shot placement, but damn was he lucky.

Given the circumstances, even if it was just a black bear, I'm thinking .44 Mag and above.

          .45 will work just fine...

What ever I could find with the most energy...Probably a 200gr +p+ load for penetration. Definably not the tool for the job. Half the energy of a .44. Even a 10mm at 725 ftlb of energy is lacking IMO.

Those stupid 50 caliber rounds were designed precisely for this purpose. I'd go with a SW500 personally, or a short-barreled AR in .50BEO or something else equally large

According to these guys you need a Howitzer with a pistol grip that shoots +P rounds.

A .45 is just going to piss a bear off. Keep in mind that, as far as terminal ballistics are concerned, a .45 is pretty much the same as a 9mm or .40.

If you have a 6" bull barreled 1911 with a fully supported chamber, you can install a 22 or 24 lb recoil spring and shoot 45 Super.

I killed a bear with a 1911 on Red Dead Redemption yesterday. It only took 3 shots.

Buy some bear spray. Leave the 45 in the holster to protect against 2 legged predators.
