well, since the op never mentioned griz or brown bear, I'll say a heavy hollow point from a 45 acp will kill a black bear as he was questioning about-deader than hell. Black bears are thin skinned and light boned, they kill easy-even the large ones. Choose the fastest heaviest hollow point you can and you will be fine.
