Grease on slide rails

I think grease is underestimated. I use it on rails and bearing surfaces in both rifles and auto pistols. It works greats, guns arent much different than machines or tools and need to be lubricated similarly. It just makes more sense, metal rubbing metal needs grease.
I just use cheap High Temperature Wheel Bearing grease (the red not the white) from an auto parts store (like under 5 bucks for a can that'll last for ages). Some tactical video sugguested it, so ive dont it since.

I started using grease one the rail portions only within the last year or so. I do notice a difference in performance. The slide seems to move more smoothly during hand cycling and firing. I also like the fact that grease wont drip out of the grooves. The only downside is that the grease seems to attract and hold onto more carbon and grit.

+1 on grease won't drip out of the grooves...

I started using oil right after shooting leads thru most of my pistols since leads leave all kinds of residues & debris...
For those pistols that I send only FMJ bullets down the tubes, I apply just a small amount of grease on the slides...then I'm gtg

Not meaning to start a debate on grease vs. oil - but I've noticed that many are applying grease to slide rails - which I've never done. In my own mechanical experiences I would think a small amount of moly grease would be ok. What's this crowd doing?

I tried grease and ended up w/ a mess that can't even be cleaned off (the slide rails) easily. I'll never to it again.

What did you use? An NLGI Grade 1 grease (or even grade zero) is what you should be using.

It is a mixture of their oil and grease (in a single syringe). Not cheap, about $10 for a single 10cc syringe, but should last a good year or two per pistol.

I use tetragun, mostly because I like their other products and tetragun is readily available.

+1 on the availability, I'd like to try something else, but its worked well enough for my shooting needs. I do like Gun Butter as a liquid lubricant though.

Spring or pivot, I oil it, if it slides I grease it.

+1 for this sentiment. I have a fondness for Mobil 1 myself, and frankly I think a lot of the firearms specific greases are pretty overrated. The operating environments most machine and bearing greases are designed for far exceed what the slides on my Sigs are doing. Heck, a can of generic hi-temp bearing grease from the automotive section would probably last the rest of my life for five bucks.

Understatement of the week, reading msds's generally give you the same ingredients.

More money than sense, maybe.

I like M1 oil, whatever's left in the bottle. If you need grease, try Sta-Lube Synthetic Wheel & Bearing grease. P/n is SL3301, bar code reads '72213 33010'. A 2.5 oz. tube (about half the size of a giant tube of toothpaste) is about $7, iirc. It lasts a LONG time.

For real GUN LUBRICANTS, I usually whore the makers every year or 2 for free sample bottles or tubes

hmmm.. interesting. I only used grease because I heard that it decreases the need to clean the gun.

After reading the thread fully, I'm almost embarrassed to say that I used Finishline bicycle grease (the only grease I had). The result wasn't pretty. This was 7+ years ago and I still live in fear of putting grease on on my guns.
