so i went over to the 1911 forums and was a bit intimidated to be honest. this is my first 1911 and i want the cbob to last me a lifetime. i was hoping to gain a little insight but became more paraniod regarding the tightness of the slide. i already know from looking at my gun at my ffl that the slide won't release...yes, it is that tight...i have to pull back a little for the slide to go forward as it will not release when racked back.
i will be picking it up tomorrow and working with it over the weekend.
the other thing that worries me is breaking the gun down and reassembly...i hate to scratch this gun up being a novice but i really don't have any other options...learn by doing. hopefully, the manual will be detailed on the breakdown and i won't have any problems.Comment

Don't be paranoid. Re read this thread where I outlined what to do for break in. I'm a member of the 1911forum, so that's where I got the info to pass on to you. When you say you couldn't release the slide with the slide release, was there a magazine in the gun? That's what was holding you up. Mine did the same thing when brand new. Stiff springs in new mags. Works fine now. My Kimber Raptor was the same way. Relax, you'll be fine.so i went over to the 1911 forums and was a bit intimidated to be honest. this is my first 1911 and i want the cbob to last me a lifetime. i was hoping to gain a little insight but became more paraniod regarding the tightness of the slide. i already know from looking at my gun at my ffl that the slide won't release...yes, it is that tight...i have to pull back a little for the slide to go forward as it will not release when racked back.

Watch the videos on YouTube to get a visual reference for take down. It will help. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. And again, welcome to the DW fold.

there was a mag in the gun when i tried to use the slide release...the slide just does not go unless i pull back a tiny bit and force it while holding down the release. so are you saying to remove the mag and rack it that way?Don't be paranoid. i printed out all the info i could over on the 1911 forum and will read over that material before working on the cbob. i want to be a member of the exclusive cbob club over there btw....sounds fun!
also ryan, good call on the youtube vids...i didn't even think of that...i can watch someone taking it down versus only reading up on it. the combo of both should help tremendously.
appreciate all the responses thus far....hope to have more info soon and post up some pics of my new baby!Last edited by holiday; 02-18-2010, 12:39 PM.Comment

If you'd like to see the relationship between the mag & the slide release, remove the slide and reinsert the slide release lever only. Then pop in a mag with one round in it. You'll see the mag doesn't contact the slide release lever and it moves freely. Pop out the one round and you'll see the mag follower pushes up the slide release - so when you try to release the slide with an empty mag you're working against the mag spring too, makes it pretty tough.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

That is correct, most semi auto, all 1911s, are designed so the magazine follower engages the slide stop after the last round. This is what grand master John B. designed so after the last round you can just drop the empty mag, insert a loaded one and release the slide. There are two schools of thought where one suggests to release the slide stop, and another suggests to sling shot the slide. I personally like the sling shot method. Whatever you do do not release the slide without chambering a round because you will eventually damage the frame and extractor - once in a while is ok, like when you are checking for function, just don't make that a habit.Comment

correctamundo dfletcher...you were absolutely right on regarding the mag and slide. the slide moves just fine. i am very impressed with the quality....literally no gaps anywhere...what a beautiful piece.Yes - much easier that way.

i guess i need to break her down next and clean'er up...watched a couple vids and that should help. the manual is pretty much useless but hey, its a dan wesson and that speaks for itself.
i will post up pics when i can, and a range report as well...man, this gun is so perty i don't know if i want to shoot it...but i will

Oh, you'll shoot it. And you'll love it. What year is yours again? It's the first digit after the CZ in the serial.

Did you buy a brand new one or a blem? Could be that you dealer ordered a blem but charged you for a cosmetically perfect new one.i'm having to send my cbob back...i found some blemishes on the gun. the gun was sold as new so i am currently dealing with dan wesson and have an email into them at the moment.
