• 9mm ammo recommendations?

Hello CalGuns people,

First off, this site is very informative. I found useful information regarding importing a pistol from out of state (SF bay area transfer thread) and a great retailer (summitgunbroker.com). Thanks a bazillion. Using that information I've ordered my first pistol. :-) Which leads me to my question...

What ammunition do people recommend for 9mm pistols (G17) and why? Links from http://www.calguns.net take me to very cheap ammo (Wolf): Is it any good??

thanks again,
Rich

I used American Eagle in the rental G17 I trained with. Most of the indoor ranges in the SJ area do not allow Aluminum cases, so, Wolf and CCI Blazer can't be used.

What are you looking for? Something to plink with or something for self defense?

I use the Wally World Winchester Whitebox 100 count for plinking (~$11)

For self defense, I have Federal 115gr +P+ (harder to find nowadays) and Winchester Ranger 127 +p+.

Inexpensive ammo? I go to Walmart and get Winchester's 9mm Target Ammo, a box of 100 goes for about $11.00. Its not the cleanest burning powder, but its not the worst either. I've found it to be reliable and accurate enough for my needs.

We order our ammo from Ammoman.com (http://www.ammoman.com/index.htm). Used to get the Walmart stuff but after factoring in sales tax, the ammo man cost is not that much more.

We stopped getting the Walmart value pack only because it seemed more dirty. The Fiocchi seems to have a little more kick than other ammo out there but it seems to work well for me.

Sometimes Natchez (http://www.natchezss.com/) has sales on Blazer. That is pretty good for plinking. Some don't like the aluminum but it seems to work was well as the brass stuff.

Only drawback to ordering online is buying in bulk. Used to have a problem with that but we find that we'll use the ammo eventually.

I personally stay away from Wolf. I'm always afraid the steel case would wear my chamber faster (steel on steel).

Good luck.

I'll second the recommendations for both Ammoman and Walmart for 9mm. I buy my plinking ammo from Walmart, and it's hard to get it cheaper anywhere than their 100 round bulk packs.

I also like Ammoman's Gold Dot +P 9mm, which is reasonably priced for defensive ammo. Now, it comes in bulk packs of 250 rounds marked "Not for law enforcement use", and it's rumored to be the recalled Gold Dot from a few years ago, but I've shot several thousand rounds of it without a single problem.

Even if it is, you can still use it for defense practice ammo, and use standard off-the-shelf Gold Dot to keep your house gun loaded. I won't trust an ammo/gun combo for self defense until I've put 500 rounds through, and that can get expensive with the high-priced spread.

Most of my other ammo comes from http://www.outdoormarksman.com, where the shipping is expensive for small amounts but grows very slowly for bulk. Their shopping cart will let you calculate total cost easily, and I always compare their prices.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I am looking for ammo to train with and for home defense. I assume that I'll have to train quite a bit with the home defense ammo before depending upon my ability to shoot it accurately in a stress situation. So after an initial period (user maxicon suggests >= 500 rds) of shooting the expensive home defense stuff to develop a familiarity with how the pistol handles, etc., I'll use "plinking" ammo. I was thinking of the following (from ammoman.com)

plinking = U.S.G.I. 9MM 124 GRAIN. $175/1000 rds.
home defense = 9mm +P EXPANDING POINT FMJ, BRAND NEW FROM FEDERAL 124GR. $19/50 rds.

What do people think of the following for home defense:
9mm SUBSONIC 147GR., J.H.P. JACKETED HOLLOW POINT, $139/500 rds.

According to ammoman, this is contract overrun Navy SEAL ammo (aren't they busy these days???). I'm thinking if it's good enough for them, it should be good enough for me. Comments?

thanks again,

For regular target shooting in FMJ, I like PMC.

I find it ranging in price from $5-$6 per 50rd box online.

It's the only 9mm that will work in all my 9's reliably.

I don't like to use anything over 124 grain. Nato 9mm 124 is great to practice, it is already +P, so that would get you used to defensive rounds. Nato is dirty, though. If you want to save money, Nato 115 is cheaper.

I would second on the Gold Dot 124 +P for defense. I also have Cor Bon, with which I haven't had issues personally, but cases of duds have been reported. The Federal you refer to I think is the stuff that sometimes doesn't expand, which doesn't make for a good defensive round.

Yep, the Walmart stuff is a great deal. In fact I just picked up another 500 rds today. If you can get a good deal on the Fiocchi I really like that ammo. Accurate and relatively clean burning.

Hi CG,

Being a curious newbie, why don't you like anything over 124 grain? Does it damage the pistol? Is the recoil+flash excessive??

Can I use NATO 9mm 124 for both tasks? Whatever is in US Marine sidearms seems to kill people. From http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Sep2...0923_2822.html

"The man, who had been detained for suspected terrorist activities, was brought to a screening room for questioning. There, he tried to attack an armed Marine guard. The Marine "exercised his right of self-defense" and shot the detainee once in the chest with his 9 mm pistol, military officials said in a written statement. The man died a short time later."

thanks,

The military cannot use anything but ball ammo, and yes, it does kill people. Civvies are not limited to ball and there are many options, like expanding bullets, that may (in some cases not) work better than ball.
Unfortunately, Ammolab is no longer free and that used to be my read. But here is a couple things to read Firearms Tactical and Firearms tactical 9mm ammo data.

The reason I don't use anything over 124 is because I don't shoot with it that well, not easy or cheap to find practice ammo to learn how to shoot with it well and yes, it is supposed to be harder on the handgun. My motto is that you have to shoot handguns a lot to get good (I still need to shoot a lot ), if you practice with 124 and then try to shoot defensively with 147 that you have not been shooting, you probably won't even hit the barn, much less the barn door and you may end up dead.

So after an initial period (user maxicon suggests >= 500 rds) of shooting the expensive home defense stuff to develop a familiarity with how the pistol handles, etc., I'll use "plinking" ammo.
I actually shoot a mix of cheap and expensive ammo each trip, through all the mags (I number them so I can keep track of malfunctions). I keep a range log of how many rounds I shot, how big the groups are, any problems I've had, and such, because memory is a fuzzy thing.

This lets me spread out the expensive stuff over time (I'm a bit of a cheapskate), and helps me figure out if any problems are ammo-related.

Once I've got my confidence up, I mostly shoot cheap ammo, with a mag or two of the good stuff each trip just to make sure nothing's changing.

One good idea is to go to the Cow Palace gun show, where Miwall has an ammo booth (they're the same folks as http://www.outdoormarksman.com), and buy an assortment of different ammo so you can try a variety.

Some guns just don't care, and shoot everything well (my CZ75 and Ruger P95 are like that), so eventually you can standardize on a good combination of price and reputation. Some guns are more accurate with some weights or brands than others.

I see Ammoman is out of stock on the Gold Dot, which is odd, because they sent out an email just a few days ago saying it was back in stock (you might want to sign up for their email list). It's perfect for me, because it's reasonably priced, has a very good reputation, and works in all my 9mms.

Thanks for all of the ammo advice. I think I'll go ahead and order a 1,000 rds of the NATO 124 gr to start with. That should last a couple of weeks and allow me to get used to the pistol.
