Your Sigma experience

I got a new 9mm SWVE by mistake, I didn't know anything about them and very little about handguns in general. My 20 year old daughter who had never shot a hand gun and I went to the range and we were both able to put the rounds on target at about 15 feet. We had no problems and put 200 rounds through the gun. We had no idea about the trigger and did not have a problem with it.

Now after a little research, I found most of the complaints were with the older models and not the new releases.

I had a friend who was a Orange County, Ca Sheriffs Deputy and he was issued a sigma. He qualified with it (I think in 1995/96) and lockered it because he had to do his service in the County Jail. He was assigned there for 5 years! He would train and qualify with it four times a year.

When he was finally assigned to patrol, he went with a Sig Sauer P226. Till this day, I would ask him (he now works for DHS) why did he not go on patrol with the Sigma. He just said "I didn't like it".. Well, I guess thats the delima we all face in this thread. It was unexplainable. So, my musing is, if you like it, it works for you, fine. Who cares what everyone else thinks. S&W continues to sell many of these pistols and thats what we all need to know.

I write this because I have two friends that make fun of my newest purchase. A Rock Island Arsenal 1911 enhanced. I have many 1911s and well, I like it!. From my early model Kimbers, my Springfield Armory 1911s, Wilson Combats and Enhanced Colts, to my Rock Island, hell even my cheap *** Auto Ordance "Pit Bull" 1911 I bought at a pawn shop outside of Ft Bragg back in 1993. Just say "I LIKE IT".. Thats all people need to know..

Since the Sigma has no safety, (the trigger is the safety), I think a heavy trigger is a good idea. The fact that it fires when I pull it is what's important to me. I like a pistol with no safety.

This is exactly why I like the Sigma aside from its low price. Guaranteed to go bang everytime you pull the trigger with no safties or decockers to worry about. Long and deliberate trigger pull to prevent the possibility of accidental discharge. In my book its a perfect HD or defensive gun in general.

If anyone is still consider a Sigma, they're still available new from Turners here in the southland. Thats where I got mine and they occasionally have a sale and rebate on them that will put it just below $300. At the time I was offerred either the rebate or two extra mags and I chose the extra mags. Considering that they're chromed steel mags instead of crappy polymers like on some "other" guns, its a really good value.

I have two sw9ve and two sw40ve. Great cheap guns.

You do not have own one to have shot one and get an idea. I dont own a HK, but have shot one.

I buy quality- SIG, Glock and Ruger for my Mom. Sorry, I will never buy a Sigma, they are a bad mistake.

I have the same gun as the OP SW9F. The original sigma, IE:Glock copy. I was told it was the first 9mm Sigma in CA. I do not know if that is true, but I do know that the original owner (My good friend and partner) pre ordered it after seeing, and really liking the .40 sigma. He waited for the 9mm because at the time .40 was a new cartridge and he was afraid .40 would disapear like so many other new cartridges do, and he would not be able to get ammo for it in a few years.
He carried and shot that gun for years. He claimed to have somewhere around 20K rounds through it, and I do not doubt it. In 2006 the trigger return spring broke and he sent it back to S&W. They replaced all the springs and returned it to him good as new. It cost him postage.
He past away in 2007. I assisted his widow in liquidating his gun collection. She gave me the Sigma as momento of him. It is one of my most treasured posessions.

It may or may not be common knowledge but the older Sigmas (pre 2000) are the ones that actually gave the Sigma its bad rep. They are distinguished by their LARGE letters on the slide or the lack of an accessory rail.

I owned a SW40VE from 2007 and it ran ammo like water with not even one malfunction. I picked it up for $150 from a guy who got caught up in the internet hate. I shot the snot out of it for a year then resold it for $300.

I loved its ergos. It fit me better than my Glocks.

Good gun if you get it at a good price.

Love it or hate it I don't see anyone in the middle on these, I have had zero problems with mine 5000+ rnds and have used it as a carry gun. I guess I'm on the love it side. ( the trigger does suck)

I really like your story.

It is very true that the 1st generation of Sigmas were the ones that gave the Sigma a bad rep. The current Sigma VE has gone through a couple of re-designs. The 1990's was not the finest era for Smith & Wesson. The company was experiencing huge financial debt, but many things changed when S&W was sold in 2001.

What many people sometimes fail to understand was, when the Sigma was introduced in 1994, S&W was aiming it at the law enforcement market, the reason they introduced the SW40F first. It was at a time when many PDs were transitioning away from service revolvers to semi-auto pistols. The SW40F's Double Action trigger, was liked by many LEOs, at the time, who were accustomed to carrying a DA revolver.
