    First handgun Glock 17

I got a hand-me-down S+W .38 Spec Revolver....but that's not really my style...tomorrow I am going with my wife to an NRA handgun safety class (she's going to shoot with me) and we are going to buy a 9mm gun so she can shoot it and so it's something I can shoot. Anyone think a Glock 17 would be a poor choice or is there something better in the sub $600 range?

I was about to buy a Glock 17 yesterday after having fired it several times, then tried a CZ75b and changed my mind. Just felt better in my (big) hands, and about the same price. That said, it's hard to go wrong with either, IMHO.
Leave the cannoli, take the gun.

Should be a great pistol. You might want to rent one just to make certain she likes it.

I just got a cz75b in .40 and I want a G17. Despite everything I had heard my new CZ was not trouble free, my dads G22 on the other hand has gone at least 1k rounds without a hiccup. Don't get me wrong I love my new CZ

A Glock 19 might fit your wife's hand better than a full sized 17.

Yeah either the 17 or 19 would suit you both just fine. I started with the 17 since it was the original, but in my mind I always told myself I would have to get a 17, 19, 26, 34, 23, 20, and 21 A little bit of everything he he

I say split the difference and get a Glock 19.

                            1st gun

So many choices these days.... As a confirmed Glockaholic the 17 or 19 is a great starter gun. However, don't discount the new S&W M&P pistols. The grip panel is replaceable for different size hands, could be a benefit if different folks shoot the same gun. They have good triggers and good sights. All the features common on defense guns these days are on the Glock, M&P, XD. If the XDs or M&Ps had been available 20 years ago I'd probably own 13 of them instead of Gaston's wonderful inventions.

Good luck with your choosing. Can't go wrong with any of them really as long as they fit your hand or the shooters hand I should say.

I own a G19 and G17. My wife doesn't like either because they don't fit her hand. She went with a S&W M&P9 and really likes it. She did well enough at a tactical handgun class to earn most improved shooter. The 19 and M&P have been very reliable. Not enough rounds through the 17 to call it reliable but no malfunctions so far, probably in the 500 range.
