I know if it's broken and following it will keep chambering and firing until the mag's empty (been there)... why would spinning keep the new rounds from chambering?

      maybe not...
I'm picturing this, it could fit with the story as told by the owner...
      load
fire some, the mechanism that holds the hammer back after chambering is damaged
set the gun down on the bench
      hammer hold-back finishes breaking off
hammer drops and you get contiuous fire-and-cycle until empty, complete with spinning on the bench where it's laying...

      possible?

when my 9mm failed, I fired one round and the gun cycled through the entire magazine fire-and-chamber-and-... until bottom of mag. had my finger OFF the trigger after the first round.

anyway, with a broken gun, it sounds possible to me.

in general, recoil operated weapons rely on the frame not moving (ie being held in the hand) to generate enough momentum in the slide to chamber the next round. a loosely held weapon will often "short-stroke" and not chamber the next round. much less, a weapon that has just cooked off a round, and spun a 360 trying to get the slide to move...

ps- that mechanism that holds the hammer back is called a disconnector.

                AD

Do these guns have external trigger transfer bars ? There have been AD's with such designs when laid down, but not full auto that I know of. I remember a gun shop owner telling me that he could make a certain make of 9mm pistol go full auto by inserting a penny or dime into it and then shake it out if it brought any undue attention. Don't know of the truth of that. Just stating that a foreign object could possible lodge in the gun preventing the disconnector from doing its job. It probably was altered. Full auto pistols are not uncommon in some parts of the world.
