    .357SIG vs 5.7x28

Both are considered good for long range applications. How do they stack up against each other?

This isn't exactly your question, but since you get better at shooting long range by shooting alot, I like the 357sig b/c (IMO) it's one of the absolute best calibers for reloading.

You can get 9mm bullets that work as 357sig from montana gold pretty cheap (shipping included).

No one likes to reload 357sig cases, so these are usually cheap as well, even during the great brass rush.

And almost no one but cops shoots 357sig, so the cases are almost always once fired.

Compared to reloading other calibers (e.g., 10mm) all these are nice major improvements.

As for inherent accuracy, I have no idea the relative merits other than a 357sig barsto barrel in my glock seems to shoot well at 25yards (though that's short distance for you I imagine).

What, to you, is long range?

You can look up ballistics on both.

          You can't buy the 5.7 that's worth a damn.

My question is not only range, but universality of the round, which means SD and hunting if SHTF.

I think your comparing apples and grapes. The rounds are non-comparable.

And reloading should not be a big part of your equation based on your needs.

OK, so which caliber would you recommend for good barrier penetration, SD, hunting and good range.

I'm with Unit74 on this one. It's an apples/oranges comparison. Each of these two rounds was designed for a different purpose. The .357 Sig was designed to mimic .357 Magnum performance in a rimless cartridge, ie an auto loading .357 without the feeding issues the rim presents. The drawback is that it is quite a high pressure cartridge. The 5.7 was designed to defeat body armor. Hence the small diameter, high velocity, spitzer round. You probably know this already, but you cannot buy the real AP 5.7. I would recommend the .357 Sig over the 5.7 by 28 for SD and hunting. I'm sure it would have good penetration and range as well.

I would go with the .357 sig because of the better penetration. The 5.7x28 round is not worth a damn because of the ammo. We can't have those wonderful military rounds. the .357sig also has better take down because of the heavier weight of the bullet.

This is all based on a little bias and the fact the 5.7x28 is better suited for a sub machine gun.

                        Long Range Pistol?

If it is for hunting(?) I guess a magnum load like the .44MAG etc. -from a long barrel revolver perhaps(?).

The.357SIG and 5.7FN are both just gimmick's designed to separate a fool from their money.

Do you mean the higher-velocity military-type "armor piercing" stuff?

I can never remember if it's 192, 195, etc. but if that's what you mean there's a guy in Florida that sells cases of the stuff. My local FFL has some every now and again but he keeps most of it for himself.

If you mean the stuff that was originally meant for the P90 and not the "hunter variants" then you CAN buy it, it's just hard to find. It's not like it's illegal. (is it? i hope not!)

IIRC it's 190... yes you can find it (occasionally), but it's $$ and tough.
