Skip the single shot AOW. (A pump would be cool though).

Buy a 500 S&W and some Matt's Bullets shot shells. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AMxz6zGITM Or, if you reload, make your own shotshells. You can buy the kits here. https://www.sagesoutdoors.com/50-510...shell-wad-kit/ You jump from a .410 to a 28 GA and, well, a .45 LC to 500 S&W - which can be loaded down to .45 LC ballistics should you so desire).

That's what I'm going to build. Though I'd like to go .410 instead of 12GA. I have some things to work out to be able to do that though. Right now it's be pretty easy to go 12ga if you want to.
      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

The only thing that would bring it into play is if you didn't own it and were trying to buy it through dealer inventory. Because you are correct in saying that CA considers AOWs as handguns, and any handgun you buy needs to be on the roster or acquired through an exemption.

Sorry to revive, but just to be clear, is it your position that creating a semiautomatic Title 2 AOW from an already owned Title 1 Other would not run afoul of "manufacturing an unsafe handgun" PC? Thanks.

Yes, so long as it's not a Title 1 Other that's a stripped lower or frame.

In 1968 my dad bought a new T/C Contender with a 45 L/C-410 barrel. It has the Screw on choke. I was told years ago it was illegal in Ca. And subsequently shipped it ( barrel only) out of state to a relative. Is this still the case? Seems stupid as the gun was legally purchased in Ca.

CA SBS laws were amended several times since the 1960s.

I believe the amendment in 1973 caused CA SBS laws to include firearms that can discharge shotgun shells and had a barrel length of less than 18".

Since then, a CA SBS can be:
              1. a firearm that can discharge shotgun shells and has a barrel length of less than 18". [PC 17180(a)]
              2. a firearm that can discharge shotgun shells and has an overall length of less than 26". [PC 17180(b)]
              3. a firearm that was made from a shotgun and has a barrel length of less than 18" or an overall length of less than 26". [PC 17180(c)]
              4. any device that can be made into a functional firearm that meets the requirements of 1-3. [PC 17180(d)]
              5. a firearm and parts for that firearm, that when assembled will cause the firearm to meet the requirements for 1-3 and those parts are in possession or under the control of the same person. [PC 17180(e)]

I purchased a Mossberg Compact Cruiser AOW (new old stock) off of Gunbroker last November. And the waiting began.

But, FYI, Mossberg has discontinued its AOW line, as has Serbu. You can't even buy AOW parts from Serbu. (I tried to purchase a shortened pump system from them.) So, it's not that easy to very short AOW - even in 12 GA. Of course, you could cut the barrel on a Mossberg or Remington Shockwave, but you could only trim off an inch or so without changing the pump system.

                  True.

But I never said anything about very short.

Just came across this thread. Having 2 encore pistols, the info in here has been helpful.

Now... to give up another $200 for a literal hand cannon... maybe, maybe.
