I've never understood the rap on .44 Mag recoil. I have Model 69 L Frame with 2.75" barrel and shoot Mags without pain or regret. I actually bought it to shoot .44 Specials but then someone gifted me quite a few boxes of Mags and I've had much fun with them. Felt recoil heavier from shooting 9mm in very lightweight Ruger LCR. I say buy it.

I have the 4" and I agree it's ok. I bought it to shoot primarily .44 Special as well, but I'd carry Magnums without much concern if I took it backpacking.

At that price point, you can easily resell later and break even more or less

To me a 5" is pretty much perfect.

The 8 3/8" or longer is great for hunting and silhouette shooting.

5" give the option for carry and shooting to 100-120


44 is a wrist twister. It can make you develop a flinch that will transfer to other platforms too.

X grips are your friend. Smith puts them on the 500, I put them on all of my big Smiths.
