    S&W 1911s

    Hi!

    I am interested in purchasing a S&W 1911 945.

    Are these CA legal?

I noticed that there is also a 38 Super version. Is this one legal to purchase in CA as well?

I apologize for these newbie questions, but I worried that I could not be able to have them shipped within State.

If anyone here ones one of these handguns, could you please comment on them and let me know what you think of these guns? or anyone who owns a S&W 1911?

    Thanks a lot!

In my opinion Smith & Wesson's 1911s are the best of breed sub-$1000 1911s on the market. Fit & finish, accuracy, reliability and the trigger are first rate. Most (but not quite all) models are available in California including the premium ($2500 MSRP) Performance Center DK in 38 Super.

The pride of my pistol collection is my top of the line Performance Center PC1911.

      Hi!

      Thanks for your message!!!

If you could do it all over again, would you have purchased your S&W PC in 38super or 45ACP??

      I want to try something different (I have 3 1911s in 45).

Also, I'm curious to know why your S&W is more expensive than the other PCs, such as:

      Thanks for all your help

I have three 1911s as well. An early Springfield Armory - the predecessor to the Mil-Spec, an early Kimber Ultra Carry, and the PC1911. I would not change a thing with my Smith. I'm a 45 guy. Besides when was the last time that you saw a good deal on 38 Super ammo? That PC1911 is scary accurate and the equal of any premium 1911.

I really got to say - your pictues have got me drooling over a PC!!!!

Thanks also for your advice! I didn't even think about the cost of 0.38 super. How does the price compare to 45 ACP?

Not as bad as I thought. Midway is of course completely out of stock and I've never seen it at Walmart but it looks like $18-38/50. I think you're going to be hard pressed to find any right now.

Not to hijack the thread but I was wondering how are the ballistics on the .38 super? I have only ever seen them for 1911's

As a data point you can go to the Federal Ammunition website and look at the numbers for their 130 grain .38 Super +P:

                Federal 130 grain .38 Super

It shows muzzle velocity of 1200 fps and energy of 416 ft-lbs. It seems to be in the same league as a hot 9mm.

A lot of USPSA shooters use 38 super. They can load it to major and get up to 30-31 rounds in an open gun. Unless you reload, I would not get a 38 Super over a 45ACP. My S&W 1911 is one of the first 1200 made and I have not had one problem with it. I shoot it at IDPA once or twice a year. I really wish S&W would come out with a double stack 1911.
                  I heard that they have a 9mm 1911 available.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

I have a 945. Really nice gun that shoots well, but it is not really a 1911. It sort of looks like a 1911 but has no interchanging parts, not even mags. I was considering the 38 super PC 1911 as well, as it is available in Cali, but the ammo availability turned me off. Dont mind paying the price, but I looked and could not find any to purchase. Iwould like to buy one of their PRO series 1911 in 9mm, but those are not on the list, at least not yet. Good luck in your search...

That is something to keep in mind. Right now it's possible to order hard to find ammo online, but if the mail order ammo ban passes your screwed. You'll be down to rolling your own.

945 is S&W's attempt to better the 1911 before they brought out the 1911 line. It's a PC gun and is well over $1000, typically > $1500 new. It's a great shooter, but it's NOT a 1911.

The SW1911 line are 1911s with firing pin safety. They are very good out of the box. If you don't plan to tinker/customize, I believe it's the top choice in a 1911 style pistol. I have 4 and I am happy with all of them.

                            Wow guys,

Thanks so much for your helpful advice.

Now I gotta think whether 38 Super is right for me.

                            I've never reloaded before.

Everytime I go to the range, I just purchase 45.
