Kahr CW9 as an every day carry?

I'm proficient with my Glock 19 but it feels just a little too bulky to comfortably carry.

I've never been able to get comfortable shooting an M&P Shield.

With the limited options on the roster I am seriously considering a Kahr CW9 as a good middle ground between the size of G19 and Shield.

Does anyone have any experience carrying a CW9 or have any other suggestions for guns about that size?

If you don’t mind carrying in condition 1, P238 is a great CCW pistol.

The 19 is bulky or hard to conceal? If the latter, try the G26. That’s my carry 90% of the time. Sometimes I’ll carry the 19/23 (winter) or the Shield. But that’s about it.

I tried the trigger on the CW9 and don’t like it. If you’re used to the Glock trigger, it’ll definitely be a learning experience (shoots like a DA revolver).

I don't think I can get a full grip on a G26 or P238 which is the main reason a Shield is uncomfortable for me to fire. I shoot a fairly wide variety of revolvers, hammer, and striker pistols so I'm not necessarily confined to the feel of a Glock trigger.

      Thanks for the reply!

So can’t get a full grip?

The P238 and CW9 are close to the same profile (single stacks). If you have big hands, there is extended magazine and pinky base plate (Glock).

Have you shot/held the CW9? It is somewhat popular for carry (in CA), just not for me.

Most of the reviews I've seen on the CW9 are fairly positive. Kahr has the long trigger pull and minimum 200 round break-in period. Some say they are a bit harder to rack, but that's more regarding their smaller pistols like the PM9. I've had 2 PM9s and a CM9, and never had an issue with them. The P380 seems to get the most negative reviews. Best info can be found on the Kahrtalk forum. Good luck.

As long as you train with it and get accustomed to the trigger I’m sure it would be a fine carry gun, besides the fact you may feel the sudden urge to shave your head put on a orange toga and hang out at airports. I kid.

I had a PM9 that was a great little gun, problem was I’m primarily a Glock/1911 shooter. The very long reset on the Kahr would sometimes lead to me short stroking the reset and getting a no fire situation I replaced it with a G43.

Surprised you don’t like the Shield, very similar to your Glock. I’ve had one for a long time great little shooter.

A glock 19 cut down to a 26 grip with pinky or plus 2 extension preban of course is a great option. The reason a G19 frame is so you have a light rail to mount your favorite light. You can still carry G19/18/17 mags as a back up. The CW9 is a decent pistol, but is not as refined as the PM series 9mm Kahrs. It does have a long reset that may affect your trigger pull, but if you're used to pulling through the wall of any striker fired pistol you should be GTG. Also the CW/PM 9 will be a more snappier gun to shoot, due to size and weight. If you find it uncomfortable to shoot, the new style Houge wrap around grips help out alot. I didn't need a break in period with my CW9 with 115-147grn bullets. The biggest down side of the CW9 is it's more gritty racking the slide vs the PM9, some mags don't drop free and the mag floor plates are known to come off ejecting the guts all over if dropped on concrete.

I’m not sure what the capacity is or if you’re concerned about ability to shoot it well. I’ve carried a SW 642 for years and it conceals easy and shoots well. It’s only 5 shots though. Not saying you shouldn’t get a CW9, saying if your fundamentals are solid you can shoot a small firearm well.

Carry my Kahr daily. Great lil gun. Super accurate and reliable. Have other options, but I like it, shoot it well and reach for it most often.

I carried a Kahr CW9 for a good amount of time. Also owned a Glock 43 for a good amount of time. If I had to choose the price of the Kahr vs off roster G43, it would be Kahr all day. They’re nearly identical in size. Different triggers, but Kahr has a great DAO trigger. I’m also not a Glock guy either. Sold them both off when I got my Sig 365. I remember when you could buy a CW9 for $250 in the CGN Marketplace

I did carry a CW9 for awhile, but have moved to a CM9

I swap out the mag base plates to the metal plates for carry, the plastic ones add unnecessary length to the grip

I purchased a CW9 from Turners several years ago. Photos below.

PROS - Great feel, good trigger, fits my hand well, good pocket gun.

CONS - The barrel is chrome plated and the rifling just ahead of the chamber peeled due to poor plating. It looked like a cheese grater. Accuracy rapidly deteriorated from when it was new. This was after around 200 rounds. I traded it in.

On my first permit I had 3 guns; small, medium and large. Small was; and still is, a Taurus PT738. Medium was a Sig P290 and the Large one was a Smith and Wesson 908 (poor man's 3913).

Carried the P290 for a little over 2 years. Sold it because I got something different for my EDC, so I switched to the 908 for my EDC.

Carried it for 3 years as the EDC I bought to replace the P290 was sold to my brother. I really liked the 908 but wanted to carry something a bit lighter.

So, I bought a CW9 as it is really close to the same size as the 908. Though it does have one less round in the magazine. But, to get a full grip on the 908 I had to use the magazines with the finger extender. On the CW9 I can get a full grip with the regular magazines.

I started out shooting revolvers so I have no problems with the trigger. I did however swap out the springs and guide rod. The trigger is even better now.

                          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

I carry a PM9. Gun's been reliable. Trigger is just like a revolver, which I'm kinda good at.

I really like the CW9, and I like the Kahr triggers (I’m used to snub revolvers). I think it would be just as easy to carry as the Shield, if not slightly easier.
