LAPD adopts FN509 as new duty pistol

Congrats to FN. Not that it matters to most of us in CA. Also off-roster.

They are replacing the previous standard issue .40S&W Glock 22 Gen 3.

    AFAIK...
    The LAPD sidearm RFP required:
    1. striker fired.
    2. optic ready.
    3. 9x19mm

Supposedly it came down to cost and FN USA provided a lower price per unit.
^They were cheaper than the Glock 17Gen5 MOS, H&K VP9 OR, and SIG P320 RXP; which also passed the testing.

You are equating perfection with low bidder?

Government purchases = low bidder unless it's a toilet for the Space Station or security for legislators.

FN could sell the costs at a 50% loss.... this is marketing.

LAPD is a lot of things, their procurement department isn't exactly something I'd base my purchases on.

Think someone in Texas or anywhere else really gives a hoot what pistol the LAPD carries since with the next contract it could be something else.

If the pistol was available in California, yeah, I could see some associated buying on the part of the public but who outside of LA specifically or California in general gives a flying whatever?

The pistol they chose was the low bidder. I guess if that is what you want then go get one. What else do you buy that is a low bidder product, maybe your carry ammo? Just saying.

IIRC, LAPD just had their budget slashed by the pro-BLM, pro-defund the police politicians. So they're hurting financially. It's no surprise they went with the lowest bidder.

Off roster? Is that safe…. That’s what I don’t understand.

Someone wrote a comment in the article that the LAPD is getting these pistols at $150 each.

I'd buy four at that price.

                    From the article:

                    Sam says:
                    August 10, 2021 at 20:06
Four manufacturers submitted pistols that met the quality standards. FN won because they offered the pistols to LA for $150 each…

                    .

I like FN pistols. For duty , I am used to a Glock 9mm. Gen3 and Gen5 are my favorite. I do find FN guns to be very reliable. Shot several of them.

So let me get this straight people really think LAPD chose the FN just because it was the cheapest. Ok, so if they are only concerned with saving money why do they specify an OR pistol? Nothing says all I care about is saving money like slapping an RMR on a gun that costs less than the sight. Thats straight up retarded.

Doesnt sound like much of a budget crunch if they plan to equip the force with expensive electronic optical sights on their duty pistols.

All those new woke millennials joining LAPD must not be able to hit jack chit. They gotta give them guns with RMRs. Make it as easy to shoot as possible.

I have two guns with RMRs and it's like cheating compared to iron sights.
