Found a model 57 no dash

Found a model 57 no dash. It looks almost new, but a couple questions.
Just a little blue missing from where the ejector rod locks into the fram and a light turn line. Otherwise looks new. I don't think it's a reblue, but it has just enough end shake to feel it. And the grips look worn, or someone sanded the checkering down and put some oil on them.
Would a no dash come from the factory with just a hint of end shake? And the grips looked replaced. Should it have come with Cokes?
They want 1550.00 for it. I know stuff is crazy now and N frames have gone up, but toying with the idea. To High?

I think price too high. Condition of grips and your suspicions of finish and end shake, try to negotiate price down.

Too high would be my opinion. And assuming "butte co" means "Butte County" rather than Butte, CO" - a 57 no dash" with cokes would be C&R eligible which means it's roster exempt and no "CA premium" should apply. At least above & beyond a modest "doing business in CA" premium.

Real coke grips run about $500.00 or so, which means getting the gun into factory shape puts you about $2K for the gun.

I'd say about $1,100.00 for the gun.

A tad end shake is fine, so's the striation wearing on the ejector rod.

I don't think it's a reblue, but I'm not even close to an expert. Barrel pin is still round and hammer and trigger are still case colored. Grips just look like plain Jane targets that someone sanded down. For a better fit maybe. Cant even tell if they were diamond grips, let alone cokes. Really want a 27 but N frames don't show up around here often

Too high is what I think also. The acceptable end shake is around .003-.005".
Is the end shake still present when cocked? What is the measured cylinder gap when the end shake is removed by holding the cylinder to the rear against the recoil shield? Total gap should not exceed about .006" in a good gun. I have a 66 I bought used in the mid 1970's that had so much shake I had to stretch the crane, then had to have the barrel turned back one turn and trimmed to reduce the gap. It's perfect now. Going to a LE Armorer"s school that covered S&W revolvers in 1982 has repaid itself many times over in maintaining my stable over the years.

You may want to check Gunbroker completed auctions. They show 57 "no dash" going anywhere from just over $1K to mid $2K. Since the 57 didn't show up until 1964 the target grips may be Goncalo Alves type. Not cheap (anymore) but a lot less than Cokes or diamonds.

I paid $1100 for a 85,maybe 90% 6" 57 no dash 5 years ago or so no box. I can see $1500 these days with box and papers. But modified grips in a gun rug? No chance if you care about resale. BUT, great guns and I'd doubt you'd regret buying it if it's a shooter. I'd probably go 1300 without much regret.

Geezer. Not measure end shake or gap. But I just did not know if it may have shipped with just a very small amount back then. Guy didn't know about a box. It's on consignment.
At Down Range if anyone is interested. Still toying with an offer, but if it sells I won't cry. (To much)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are relatively fewer 4" .41s versus 4" .44s. Performance wise the .41 loves the 6", but off the top of my head I don't remember the last time I stumbled across a 4".

My first year (July, 1964) Model 57 no dash was purchased from the original owner at the Pomona gun show back in the 90s. It is the presentation model (avatar) and the owner said he did not change the grips.
OP, I don't know much about placing value on guns but I would not pay $1550 for the gun you described. Shop around a little and you may find something better for less.

                            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.
