Thoughts on glock 29?

If you plan on carrying in anything other than 10mm, not sure how Tulare county does it, but down in OC, it must be in the caliber listed on your license.

As far as I know for our CCW it’s only the gun and serial that matters; I haven’t heard any mention of law against conversion or alternate barrels for listed guns. That being said I think I’d better call the sheriff and ask to be sure.

CA laws requires the handgun's make, model, caliber, and serial number to be listed on the carry permit. [PC 26175(i)]

If the handgun does not exactly match what is listed, then it is not valid to carry.

Damn, I see. Thank you for the clarification. On the other hand Tulare allows up to 10 guns, maybe I could just qualify for the converted caliber and have it added to my license.

Full disclosure, I got into the shooting sports after suffering a stroke (11 years ago this April). It paralyzed my left side. Before the stroke I was ambidextrous. For years after I could not do many things with my right hand and so that is why I wanted Gen 4 Glocks.

It took 2 years of rehab to recover to the point I could return to work. I realized I needed to learn to use handguns for self-defense. I grew up shooting rifles. I picked up the G29 as a bear gun because I am a biology teacher and a former field biologist. So on my breaks I often go to Yellowstone, Glacier, and other places that is grizzly country and I wanted a bear gun. I have never needed to use a gun in a grizzly encounter in my now 60 years of life, but I would rather have and not need it than not have and wish I had it that one time.

When I found out I preferred it over the G30 initially, I spent money on getting training with it. I have some arthritis in my hands and some weakness in my wrists. With the 21 lb spring, it is close to my limit to rack the slide but I can. The day after shooting it my wrists are sore. To me it is worth it.

It is the fun factor. It puts a smile on my face.

I do have a grip ball that I have been using daily and it seems to be helping.

I also have a 6" KKM 2 ported barrel for range use. It is fun and makes follow up shots even faster. When I get time to reload, I will use it when I load lead rounds.

A sort of OT but related:

We can get a physicians opinion/RX to get special parking spaces, walk-in tubs, smoke weed, get narcotics you name it but we can't use the same to get an off-roster handgun to help with something like this, buying a gun with an ambidex mag release?

The answer isn't get a different gun because no one says don't drive your jacked F350 and instead get a Kia Soul.

Well, the holes it makes are not that much larger, just 0.05 of an inch wider. A hot 10 mm load has twice the muzzle energy of a 45 ACP load which more than makes up for that slightly smaller diameter.

You can easily find 10mm SD loads that are loaded somewhere between a .45 SD load and a hot 10 mm load used for hunting that is effective for self-defense without over-penetration and does not increase felt recoil. With the Glocks, a heavier recoil springs takes care of that.

I did purchase a G29 and a G30 and tried both and actually found the G29 had less felt recoil and easier to control. With my freedom week mags, I can carry 15+1 rather than the 13+1 with the G30. It is more versatile because I have a large range of ammo choices. I can choose from hot hard cast loads for bear defense to mild hollow points for SD or home defense. I have one less caliber to stock.

I have not bothered with a CA CCW because until recently my county was may issue with a very good cause and I will be leaving CA by next June. I have NV and UT permits and I can carry whatever I want with whatever modifications I want when I am out of state. When I renewed my NV permit last time, there was an attorney in the class that made it clear that due to a NV Supreme Court case, even triggers could be modified and that could not be used against you in the State of Nevada. The only question would be was the shooting done in self-defense or not. I know this holds only for Nevada so I still keep stock triggers.

I do carry the G29 when traveling in my car for many reasons, one being I am proficient with it and I know that the bullet will penetrate barriers if the need arises.

I am of the opinion that one should try before they buy. For me though, the G29 worked much better than the G30. The recoil impulse of the G30 is much slower so the felt recoil is greater. The recoil impulse of the G29 is quick so the felt recoil for many is less. The key is the recoil that is perceived by the person who is shooting the firearm.

A few years back, there was a lawsuit filed against the roster with the claim that it discriminated against left handed shooters because it did not allow for the purchase of Gen 4 Glocks to allow for the ambi mag release. I believe one of the plaintiffs was an amputee, he had lost his right arm and so this was important. The eventual ruling was there are other on-roster options even if a person might not be able to get the exact firearm they wanted. Also, if one paid extra, they could find off-roster guns from private party sellers.

As for scripts from doctors, that is not exactly true either. I have chronic back pain and I am a teacher. If I obtained a script for any type of opioid pain med, my credential would be suspended until I was no longer using them. I had to choose working and the pain or disability and no pain. So I chose working and a pain management program.

I learned to deal with the pain and over time my brain just learned to mostly ignore it. The same would have been true with a script for MJ. We have a teacher at my site that went that route and tried to hide it from the district. He eventually was found out and basically was forced into a situation where he had to under go a drug test. So he just admitted it and showed the recommendation. This way he did not lose his job. His credential is suspended until he no longer needs it or stops using it for at least 4 months and then he has to undergo drug testing every 2 months and at unannounced random times several times. He checked himself into a drug rehab and when he gets out he will have his hip replacement surgeries.

He played basketball in Europe for 10 years and messed up both hips. That is the cause of his pain.

If I did the MJ route, according to the Feds, I would lose my gun rights. I also would not qualify for my NV or UT CC permits.

Life is about choices though.

Shot placement is 90% of stopping power.

The 40 was created for shooters like this poster. The 10mm kicks too hard for him and most girls.

Currently in process for my CCW. My Glock 29sf is my 3rd weapon on my application. This will be for woods/camping/hiking carry gun.

People love to bloviate like a bunch of neckbeards at a gunshow about the 10mm. Its a cool round for sure. But dont kid yourself thinking your a b@d@$$ just for owning one. 10, 9, 40, 45, 357, 38 are all proven and plenty adequate for self defense against thin skinned predators like human beings or mountain lions. Its probably smarter to choose the one you practice the most with and are the most proficient with. If it is 10mm, thats fine, i dont see why you would only use 10mm for camping and hiking and not for EDC if that is what you are the most proficient with. Seems kind of dumb to me.

While one would never hunt moose with a 9/40, they seem to die with a few shots from 9/40.

Currently loving my Walther P99 but I’ve recently become fascinated by the 10mm round and its versatility. The G29 seems to be a very potent and attractive little carry piece and being on-roster, probably wouldn’t hurt my wallet too bad. Honestly if there were no roster, I’d just go get a P99c in .40 to complement my P99. However, considering what a tall order that is in our state, I feel like the G29 would satisfy the same itch but at a far lower cost and with a much better aftermarket. The fact that it can shoot both 10 and .40 makes it an asset during this ammo crisis. More calibers you can shoot = higher chance of finding ammo. What do you guys think? Am I crazy for wanting to carry something like this?

I'm actually going with the G30, hopefully will start the DROS next week. I found out that you can drop a G29 barrel in it and it will run like a dream. They use the same recoil spring too, so essentially I'll have both 10mm and .45 acp in one gun. Still, I'm toying with the idea of putting in a tungsten guide rod with the 21 lb spring once I get it. I'm thinking when I go camping I'll drop the 10mm barrel in along with the mag, and for everywhere else will just run the stock barrel. Seems like the perfect set up to me, as these two rounds are very, very capable in their respective environments.
