I had to resort to Promag for Shield and M&P9 mags, and low and behold, no issues at all. They work flawlessly. This is a much better outcome than the promag M1carbine mags I tried years ago. Those mags were pure garbage. Maybe promag stepped up their game recently?

Congrats on your 3906, that's a GREAT GUN! I have one as well, super rare and the last of the 39 series from Smith and Wesson. As for Pro-Mag, we all pretty much know that they have a bad reputation. I personally would never buy a Pro-Mag magazine, there are too many other great aftermarket magazine manufacturers (Mec-Gar, Wilson Combat, etc..).

But as for the 3906 I know you are extremely limited, you should always try to stick with OEM magazines if available. But if in your case Pro-Mag was all you could find, then so be it. Again, GREAT GUN don't let it go!

I don't have any ProMags for S&W's but I do have 3 ten rounders for my FM-90 that work great. Good luck and let us know how they work.

I've had good luck picking up mags for my Smith 908 at gun shows. Didn't even have to look hard. Average price $30. Mags for 3913 are interchangeable with my 908 and I have read they will work in a 3906 but have no personal experience.

Course not really having gun shows these days.

You can configure eBay to run a search for you automatically and email you hits. But if you are not checking that email address, it is useless.

What I did in the case of my pistol was run a combination of searches. Yeah, there will be some redundancy and yeah, you will have to wade through all the chaff looking for kernels of wheat, but if you are patient...

Since you now know that S&W 39 mags also work, I would be searching for:

• "S&W 8 round magazine"
• "smith wesson 39 magazine"
• "S&W single stack 9mm magazine"
• [...]

And so on. Ideally, you're looking for sellers who may recognize they have a S&W 9mm magazine but have no idea that it fits your gun specifically. In other words, pretty much the opposite of this seller.

I would even dig up the S&W part number for the magazine and search for that.

Hope you find a cheap trove of OEM mags in great shape.

Good find on the gun! You'll just have to trawl Ebay and Gunbroker for 39, 439/539/639 and 3904/3906/909 mags, looks like there's still one listing on gunbroker for now. I'd heard nothing but bad things about Promag, picked up a 10-round Promag for my 4566TSW since factory 10-rounders were never made and it started stovepiping every few rounds at the range. Wasn't the gun because the factory mags I had ran flawlessly. Maybe a standard 8-round might have worked better but I'm not inclined to think much more highly of Promag after actually experiencing them firsthand.

Going off recollection they only made the 3906 for a year or two. San jose police bought a large portion of them. Sjpd didn't trust their officers with a gun with more than 8-9 rounds in the magazine. Different time period for sure......now you see sjpd officers running around with glock fun sticks on their duty belts.

Interesting, the 3906s seemed on the rarer side so I was curious who issued them. Looking it up it seems they're still approved for carry by officers that were originally issued them so I wonder if SJPD still has some lying around and if they'll ever hit the trade-in market.

I wish I would have bought more when I picked up my 908 about 4 years ago. It came with 2 and I picked up two more with no problems. Had I known they were going to be hard getting I would have bought a few more.

I'm really interested in how the ProMag works. I may have to buy a few of those and retire my factory mags.
