The problem is liquid ammonia (ammonium hydroxide). Liquid Ammonia is corrosive to aluminum. Check out the MSDS for Hoppes 9 and then google what aqueous ammonia does to aluminum.

Hoppes 9 is probably the safest of all if you don't have CLP, I think there was a guy who tested raw aluminum (not sure which alloy though) for 6 months in Hoppes 9 solution with no ill effect. But others like Shooters Choice or anything with a strong copper remover - look out!

Anyhow there are a bunch of threads on gun forums going back to the dawn of the internet, you can find them with Google. As with many things, you will find people who have contrary experience. I guess my point was, if you want to remove blems from aluminum, don't use a chemical that can blem aluminum And unless you want to read MSDS and chemical concentrations for every cleaner you may come across, just as a general rule stick to CLP for aluminum.

Thank you for coming through with that info because it was brand new to me. I'll keep it off my ARs then and use CLP. Honestly much appreciated!

Second person here to thank you, skyhawk. although i never clean my firearms other than hoppes 9 and/or clp, it's informative to know what's not to use on aluminum parts.

Yes that is a puzzle, although you don't ever hear of people making threads about blems on their cleaning rods either. They are cheap and plentiful, and you never have to bet your life on one...

The rods are bare aluminum, unlike the external finish of guns.

But, that's one of the truths of the internet. Everybody gripes about anything (YELP). I suspect if a $4.99 aluminum cleaning rod did get fouled, there would be a number of posts on CalGuns about it.

-did you wipe it down and oil it after use?
-contact Hoppe's and ask for the manager
-no one has ever had a problem with the cleaning tools supplied by GLOCK

There's no issue with #9 and aluminum. I read the MSDS just now and it shows ammonia at 1 to 3 per cent. The only metal sensitive to #9 is nickel.

I believe they have reduced the ammonia content over the years.
