    What to get next?

My gun collection started out modest (at least compared to some of you). This is what I have, listed in order of purchase

    1) S&W 617 (22lr revolver)
    2) Browning Buckmark (22lr semi-auto)
    3) Glock 17
    4) S&W 642 (38 sp revolver)

I'd like to pick up another semi-auto next but I'm not sure what to get. I don't really feel the need to leave the 9 mm world unless there's something really good out there (CA legal only; unfortunately for me).

What do you guys think about a Kimber 45 acp?

Have you thought about looking into a mid-sized K-frame revolver? IE a Model 10, Model 19, etc?

Still takes .38 Special, the 19 takes .357 Magnum, and they make for great range guns. They also tend to not break the bank if you get a used example and tend to be fairly available even in CA.

As for CA 1911's, I'd personally point you towards a Sig Sauer 1911. Kimber's tend to have hit and miss quality if your getting a newer example.

CZ SP-01 to stay in the 9mm world.

          S&W 686+ in .357/.38

A good 1911 does do wonders for a collection. You should give heavy consideration going that route. The Springfield "Loaded" model offers a solid firearm for the money. If you've enjoyed your Glock 17, you could also consider staying within that platform. A G21 perhaps. I do recommend a larger framed revolver as well. Alright, I'm going to stop before I recommend everything.

1911 in .45 would be good.

I say get a rifle at this point, an AR-15. If you are going to go with a 1911 in 45ACP, check out Dan Wesson PM-7, Springfield TRP, Sig Elite Stainless. There are a lot of great 1911’s available. I’m just not a big fan of kimber from all the extraction issues I have often heard about. From my understanding Kimber isn’t the quality company they used to be. They do make beautiful guns tho, and I’m sure many people here can show you pics of their kimbers and explain how they have never had an issue.

Can’t go wrong with a Glock 19 or CZ SP01.

Do you have any type of budget restriction or any planned usage for your next gun that you want to share?

Some ideas are to target high end off roster guns, which seem to hold their value decently well, or guns that you think are 'cool' from seeing them in movies, or guns that are good for a specific purpose like "hunting personal defense weapon" or "action shooting sports production class gun"

edit: my $0.02 would be for you to go for a 2011 next. 1911 style controls and heavy feeling in the hand, plus double stack for more capacity and off roster so should hold value

If you are 'collecting' then a 1911 would be a good contribution to the collection.

If you are 'assembling' firearms with a particular purpose, then a 1911 would be a good contribution to the assemblage.

But, the specific manufacturer could and will make a difference in a variety of ways, depending on whether it is part of a collection or an assemblage. Is it all about what's on the roster? What's your budget? What's the primary purpose you intend using it for; i.e., sitting on a shelf, looking good and rarely fired... or... a shooter for the range... or... self-defense... or... other? Thus, you might want to provide more specifics as to your intended purpose.

With that said, if you don't feel a particularly need to leave 9mm, there are many here who very much like 1911's in 9mm. But, again, purpose would (or could) be a critical element.
