Colt 45 Magnum...anyone know anything about it

I've been reading a book by Stieg Larsson "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and several times the author mentions a Colt 45 Magnum. I'm not familiar with it, was it common in Europe? Just curious if anyone had any experience with a Colt 45 Magnum? thanks

I've never heard of a Colt 45 Magnum.

I wonder if they are talking about the .45 Winmag or if they just don't have a clue about what they're writing about.

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

      ^^^
What he said. I have never heard of such either.

454 Casull and 46x Hornady are made on 45 long Colt brass.

      Most likely, uninformed writer.

Did you read the one about the "30 caliber magazine clip ghost gun"?
          Do these exist?

Many times, I've seen individuals saying 45 Colt Magnum when they were actually referring to 45 Long Colt. Non-Shooters often get confused and mix up 45 LC with 44 Mag. Ending up calling 45 Colt Magnum out of ignorance in firearms.

The author is Swedish and probably got confused by Colt 45 aka 45LC and 44 Magnum.

I did some searches and I don't think there had ever been a 45 Magnum cartridge.

There was a .45 Winchester Magnum designed to be used in the Wildey pistol. It was tested, but I don't know if it ever got more than a small production run.

Movie link though, but there is a small explanation: http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Girl_Who_P...ire,_The_(2009)

It's a book, whatever ever the author wants it to be. I am still looking for a Light Saber and Ray Gun .

One reason there is no such animal as a "45 Colt Magnum" is that "Magnum" cartridge pressures may be too great for standard production .45 Colt revolver cylinder construction.

Elmer Keith after years of early experimentation with the larger bores blew up one such .45 Colt cylinder, and started using .44 sixguns to develop his cartridge wildcats because there was more meat between each of six chambers.

The thing that contains the brass case during cartidge ignition/combustion is the firearm's chamber. There are, depending on the typical o.d. of most common, production sixguns five or six chambers in a revolver cylinder, with the smaller-framed guns like the S&W J-Frames having five chambers.

For example, .45 Colt load data MAX recommended cartridge or chamber pressures rarely exceed 13,900 C.U.P. (copper units of pressure) whereas .44 Magnum MAX C.U.P. are in the neighborhood of 37,000 - 39,000 according to the Lyman 50th Edition. SAAMI limits for the .45 Colt are 14,000 C.U.P. and 40,000 C.U.P. for the .44 Mag.

If one would like to run a .45 Colt at Magnum pressures they can have a 5-shot cylinder made for their revolver, or shoot .45 Colt from a gun made for .454 Casull.

Or you prep 454 Casull brass and load 45 LC to magnum levels and shoot out of rifle or Colt Anaconda FTW!
