Take a look at your locking block. The earlier ones without the radiused inside corner could crack and break. If the inside corner of your locking block ‘wings’ are square, you have an earlier model.

OP thinks the change happened sometime in the early 2000s, but never speculated as to the actual age of the gun. OP’s gun might be earlier than the early 2000’s.

That being said, you used to be able to put the serial number into a database search somewhere on the web.

Another tell might be the dust over. Early USA made 92FS berettas had the straight dust cover of the M9 rather than the angled dust over we see now.

Also, early USA 92FS models came with dot and post sights, specifically with the rear sight lacking the indentations for a 3 dot site. Later models came with 3 dot or dot and post, but the rear sight had indentations to paint the rear sights for either one.

I did buy a "parts kit" from CDNN that has steel parts. They are from an earlier model (small hammer pin) so not all parts are usable. I did swap out the hammer, trigger and mag release. If you go oversized mag release, skeleton hammer, and G-mod, this may not be worth it.

Why do people complain about the few plastic parts? The guns are every bit as reliable. The fluted plastic guide rod is more dirt tolerant than the metal rod, for you operators.
The best mods are D spring and G conversion. After that, your good to go.

I own multiple Beretta 92 series. Never a single malfunction, ever. They eat everything, even steel cased crap.

Besides The D spring and G safety mod take a look at Allegheny Arms for the fixed front sight mod where they machine a hole into the fixed front sight and install a fiber optic rod for 79.00. It makes a huge difference with aging eyes that can't pick up metallic sights anymore in dim lighting and real bright on sunny days outdoors.

The above link is very helpful. It provides info for not only the 92 series but many other models.

A special note......on the older 92's (like my 1985), check the right side of the trigger guard for a date stamp. It will be among the proof stamps. My 1985 has the capital letters "AN" in a square box. Translates.... it was made in 1985.

FWIW the plastic recoil rod saves locking blocks.

Wilson combats trigger spring is bullet proof.

After armoring a units 92s for 6 years...those two mods are my favs.

For aesthetics, add nice grips and mag release. Surefire makes/made a good after market pistol light adapter-add that and x300 for a nightstand defensive pistol.

Mine has also been 100% reliable.

I will admit though, not a big fan of the Beretta 92 especially compared to everything else out there. Thus, it sits in my safe and collects dust. I did however recently change out the barrel to a threaded Wilson Combat since I have a Griffin Armament Resistance 9 on the way for a few of my other guns and figured why not give the old 92 a chance for going suppressed as well. VZ Grips were added and the horrendous stock mag release replaced as well.
